SNL: 9/13/08 (season premiere)

Wow, Tina Fey makes a great Palin. I thought it was really her at first!

Six sketches from the Phelps show are up (legally) at Hulu.

I usually hate game show parodies, but the It’s Academic parody with home-schooled kids was spot on!

I agree that the new guy is not very funny, but if you do not like Laser Cats, you have no soul. Along those same lines, Andy as ‘Cathy’ was hilarious. And I LIKED the swim team sketch. It was just absurd enough that while not a classic, still got a chuckle over me.

And dammit everyone complaining about how SNL used to be funny. It may not be as edgy (DEAD HONKY), but people who remember the past seasons as being hilarious obviously forgot ones like Mark and Wendy Whiner.

DOUG and Wendy Winer.

Tina Fey is hereby elevated to Goddess status. Holy crap, she nailed Palin like a sailor nails a two-dollar hooker. Spot-on accent, gestures, the jaw. I am in awe.

The Palin/Clinton thing was fabulous - I also did a double-take, thinking for a second that SNL had talked her into coming on the show.

I also loved the fake commercial for the jar-opening gloves. Everything else was pretty blah.

I thought the Space Olympics Digital Video was brilliant and I don’t usually like these. It wasn’t suppose to be a parody of anything (that I ever heard of) it just,…was. Not thigh-slapping funny. Just weird and cool. I know it’s a fine line between plain stupid and jaw dropping cool, but I thought this one fell on the positive side.

It was good, but it would have been better if NBC had run it during the Olympics

I don’t know if that’s a good bad example since the Winers appeared on SNL during the time Lorne Michaels wasn’t producing the show. Maybe you could’ve picked something from Michaels’ disasterous “return” season in 1985-86?

Painfully awful. Athletes are never good at this; sports and humor just don’t mix. But they usually have at least one funny sketch to hang your hat on. (Peyton Manning had that great United Way spoof or whatever it was.)

Phelps came off as a total dork, only without the cache of Napolean Dynamite. And I hated Napolean Dynamite. Both times they gave him decent material he stepped all over it by bumbling the line. The diet commercial was a prime example.

Why wasn’t the diet commercial played immediately after the monologue? That’s when they traditionally do the spoof ads, and it was the best part of the show after the cold open. I was confused as to why they buried it in the 88th minute.

Thank god for dvr. I breezed through the entire trainwreck in under half an hour. Only funny line in the whole show was weekend update talking about Matt Cassel, the untested and inexperienced backup being pressed into service: “His nickname is Sarah Palin.”

Dammit! I just got Comcast and haven’t mastered their DVR (which has SERIOUS problems, but that’s another thread), and I missed my first SNL in years. Fortunately, it will be rerun in three weeks:rolleyes:, so I can catch up. But I did catch the opening on Hulu, and it was even better than I’d hoped for! They did a great job of pointing out Palin’s absurd flaws, and contrasting it with Hillary’s frustration was a masterstroke. They did not let me down.
I’m curious to see Phelp’s performance, though. He wasn’t that bad from the few sketches I could see, but from the comments here, I’m obviously missing quite a bit. I thought he was pretty damned good in the Phelps Diet sketch, although I agree it should’ve followed the intro. Watching at Hulu, I just assumed it did, since that’s the order they stacked it in. I loved the Space Olympics, and the T-Mobile sketch was better than I expected when I saw the title. I wonder if they’ll have Obama host in a later ep - I heard on the news that he dropped out at the last minute due to Ike. I’m amazed he has time to even do one skit, let alone host!

Finally saw the Palin/Clinton skit just now.

Tina Fey has officially hit the wall. I’ve seen it coming for a few years. For awhile I thought it was just because I realized how unfunny she is but she was actually mildly funny and showed talent in this skit and still didn’t look good. She only looked about half as hot as Sarah Palin and I really don’t think Sarah Palin is all that hot. Does anybody know if she smokes? Her skin seems old beyond her years.

Great job on the voice, though, and with obviously short notice.

Indeed - did her business and got the heck outta there.
Phelps was weak, but so were Nancy Kerrigan and Joe (“Oh, you won’t disturb me; I’ll be in my room masturbating.”) Montana in their appearances, though Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were pretty good, so never mind.

This link’s still up, if anyone hasn’t seen it.

Absolutely hysterical. I loved Fey’s comment that “just goes to show you’ve got to want it” and Hillary’s response, “yeah, I guess I should have just wanted it more…”

… I hate you.

Oh god, I swear to god they tricked me. That was not on purpose. Here’s the real link.

But it is a little funny.

Ah ha ha!

McCain camp calls Fey’s Palin portrayal ‘sexist’
I find this almost as hilarious as the sketch itself.

On the other hand, at least there’s this:

Speaking isn’t one of Phelps’ strong points. Even during his interviews at the Olympics, he wasn’t very articulate. I’m not sure how much of a hindrance his learning disability has on him, but it definitely showed during that episode.

It was like a lot of imagery from bad 70s sci fi crammed into a video for one of those really bad, overly pretentious 70s or 80s progressive rock bands.
Laser cats kicks ass.

That would be the Dinosaur Neanderthal War…
