Snow, Europe, the sea...

Woolgathering here…

Yesterday I happened to think about The Hunt For Red October. I like the scenes where Red October was leaving port. The grey skies, the snow, the black sub, the dark water, the feeling of cold… I like the images.

That got me to thinking about some other films I’ve seen. Europe in the late-'60s in Downhill Racer with it’s Porsche 911 in the snow. The Eiger Sanction, where tourists bask in the sun while Eastwood and the others are climbing the mountain. Various snippets of other films whose names I don’t recall that depict European cities in the winter.

There’s just something about those images I like.

Images… well, yeah, I guess. Having to live through the damn thing, though. It takes away any charm you might find in said images.

My house is in a charming little town in Northern Washington. Winters are cold, wet and dreary, and days are short. It’s not so bad though.

I’m one of those weirdos, too. I like it dreary. I like a heavy wet snow. I like streets that are prtly wet, partly icy. I deal with the reality of the hardships they present while truly loving their aesthetic appeal.

You should visit the Scottish Highlands in January/February. We could maybe do a house swap?

Oh man, I would LOVE that!

Of course, it gets pretty grey and nasty here in the OKC during that time of year, too, but without any oceans nearby. Sometimes we get a pretty decent Indian Summer, but the the late Winter / early Spring ice storms come.

Or a February in Chicago. My birth month.

It made for some damn chilly birthdays and frequent non-attendance at birthday parties, I’ll tell you that for free.

Well, it’s a comedy, but I’ve always liked the winter scenes in The Pink Panther.

In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, James Bond chases Blofeld to a cottage in the snowy Alps.
