Snowmageddon 2014

Yeah, the ice is the scary part.

Got about an inch of icy crufty stuff. Ranging from slush to almost rock solid depending on the surface. (Went for a little walk. Completely slushy in one area quickly become hard a few feet away. Residual effects of sunlight on the road.)

None of the crack/boom of limbs falling from previous bad storms, yet. A neighbor lost a small tree. It was v-shaped, with one branch hanging out of the road. They cut that off, leaving a very lopsided tree which is now down on the ground. But surprisingly little else.

Two brief power outages. One about 5 seconds, another just one second. This is our main concern. The last really big storm left us without power for over 3 days.

Think I might try clearing the front steps and walk late this afternoon, hopefully it will be mainly snow then and I can get the ice off before it freezes overnight. Once it freezes up, it can hang around quite a while.

All ice here. I work at one of local universities and they announced Monday for Tuesday, and we’ve been closed today and tomorrow’s been announced as well.

I don’t need to go anywhere, I’ve not lost power (at least not yet). I brought some work home that has to be done this week, and I’m watching movies and doing that.

Snow is enthusiastically coming down. We already have about an inch, and it started about an hour ago. We’re hunkering!

West of DC near Dulles Airport. They’re calling for 6-10 inches, 12 inches in the higher elevations, but nothing yet. Wife just e-mailed to say she’ll hit the store on the way home “for the bread riots.” :stuck_out_tongue:

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuckkity fuck fuck in two fucking parts.
It’s our anniversary weekend. How two hyper-cynical, overly curmudgeonly people who didn’t give a rat’s ass about the ‘holiday’ ended up getting *married * on Valentine’s Day is fodder for another thread, but take it as given that it’s now ours to celebrate. We’ve been looking forward to it for a while, have been putting in massive time in the office and making sure all our clients knew we wouldn’t be available starting Thursday and going through Tuesday.

To make a getaway happen, we needed to arrange sitting for the 4 y.o. Deviling. The last time we tried one of those day-labour temp agencies didn’t work out so well. Sure, we got a trench dug, but CPS told us not to do it again.

My in-laws are coming.

Delightful folks, but Mrs. Devil gets beyond stressed out when they’re here. If we get snowed in, it’s *not * how we wanted to spend the holiday.
Fuckkity fuck part two:

We’re going to be catching one of our favourite bands (Galactic) for a night at the legendary Capitol Theatre in Port Chester and then at Terminal 5 in NYC. Galactic’s itinerary? They’re playing in Ohio tonight (the 12th), and theoretically, will be playing in DC on the 13th. So they’ll be getting out of the 9:30 Club in DC at some unholy hour Thursday night and hoping to make a four-hour trek north on Friday? We’ll see.

So fuckitty fuck fuck. We’re likely going to be spending our anniversary with the in-laws, and if we do get out, instead of getting our groove on we’ll be spending the night in suburban Westchester County.

Serves us right, actually. Terrible snow is how we ended up getting married on V’Day.

Shakes fist!

Woke up to a foot of snow today, and it’s still coming down hard. We’re supposed to get another six inches or so.

Apparently it’s starting switching over to a wintry mix. That’s gonna suck- I like my electricity, damn it. And I just *yesterday *got my yard cleared of fallen limbs from the ice storm last week…

Heavy snow and ice all day. Work gave us an unprecedented 2 hour delay. Screw it, calling in. I am not getting stuck at work tonight…

I’ve got 13-15 inches of fluffy snow just northwest of DC. Not sure how much more we’re going to get though. The good thing is that right now it’s pretty light and I can shovel out the walkways.

Ha! My husband’s work did the same thing. We ended up with about 4" of snow, maybe 1/2" of ice, and they’re saying another 3-5 today. He’s supposed to be at work by noon. Whatever. You can’t drive out of our neighborhood - he’d have to walk (we live close enough for that). But if he’s the only one who can get there because you have to walk in, what’s the point? He’s a physical therapist - I don’t think there will be any patients coming in.

2-3 days ago, CNNs headlines about the impending snowstorm in Atlanta were about the biggest font I’ve ever seen them print. I kidded about it being the biggest snowstorm headline in a newspaper I’ve ever seen
that Wasn’t in “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and openly wondered if Ted Turner had a sleigh. :stuck_out_tongue:

The CNN headline as we speak? “Hey, Northeast, now it’s your turn” (…oh, that whacky Ted…!)

Half a foot down since dawn, but now its starting to increase in power. Wind gust are occasionally causing white-out moments which make it hard to see clearly outside through the windows. Plows are coming by (on occasion) and I still have power.

Capital Weather Gang is saying we’re going to get another 2-4 after lunch and into the evening.

I’m a bit east of Atlanta. We were on the edge of the snow/ice line the entire storm and ended up with a layer of ice covered by 2-3" of sleet, then an additional inch or so of snow last night. Sleet is more diffucult to drive on than snow, but doesn’t break trees and power lines like ice, so I’m thankful. I’m also working from home, thankyouverymuch!

Temps today are slightly above freezing. I took the 4wd out at lunch time to scope out the roads. Most of the busier roads are passable with at least one travel lane open. Back roads and neighborhoods are a crapshoot. Refreezing tonight will be a big concern.

I ended up giving a ride to a guy who had just been released from the hospital and had no way home. He was walking, getting sprayed by slush as traffic rolled by.

You do know Ted Turner has had nothing to do with CNN since 1996, right?

The speed at which it is melting today is amazing. No doubt due to temperatures hovering between 28 and 30 thru most of the storm.

Our street went from mostly icy-slush to mostly clear in about a half hour. The rushing sound of water falling into the storm drains is downright bucolic.

Mrs. FtG is out walking now. She had a serious case of cabin fever (which is unfortunately contagious).

I’m hoping that all of this gets drained off soon, going to be cold tonight and we need the roads to be clear tomorrow.

We finally saw about eight snowflakes this morning, after all the brouhaha, but…

Rain all day Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures at ground level hovering between 30° & 34° Fahrenheit, meant that trees were heavily glazed with ice. Longleaf pines just aren’t built to withstand that kind of weight on the upper branches, and we might have this type of weather event every two decades - this morning, there was a tall, spindly tree bent double over the road right next to our house. Throughout the area, thousands of trees snapped, taking down power lines, hitting homes and vehicles, blocking roads, etc. We’ve had about 14 hours of power in the past 36 hours. (Electricity goes out, gets restored, another tree down, etc.) Not too terrible, fireplace works, we have blankets and sweaters and stuff. Besides, I just spotted the linemen - jubilation!

But this morning, I found out that my aunt and uncle had been without power since midday yesterday. He’s a home hospice patient, requiring oxygen 24/7. They had no heat, their phones were dead, and my aunt was using kerosene lamps for light… in the room with the patient on oxygen! Gah! We took the generator out, hooked up a space heater and the coffee pot and a phone charger. Met the nurse out there, started working to convince the old folks to come to the inpatient facility here in town for the night, started trying to get the power company to prioritize their home for service. (As it turns out, hospice was supposed to send a notarized letter to the EMC a month ago. Instead, they waited until yesterday, in the midst of the worst storm of this century, when the power company was operating its own office on a generator, to start trying to call about the paperwork. Idjits.) Happily, my aunt and uncle finally agreed, the nurse prepped him for travel, and the ambulance came and brought them to the land of heat and lights and running water and warm meals.

Did a little more running around - loaning tarps to a co-worker who lost a window to a falling limb, groceries for a cousin who can’t drive, checking on a couple of others. I really, really want a hot shower and a cup of coffee!

Hey, this wasn’t my decade to watch him.

Jeff Zucker is president now I think, but I can’t find when they moved the Corporate HQ out of Atlanta…

Well, back to work.

In Maryland just outside DC; got about 5-6 inches Thursday, then it rained a bit in the afternoon and that cleared the roads out pretty good, but after dark it snowed again, another inch or so, and I guess it rained a bit at the end of that as well because it was very crunchy this morning.

That second round was a real kick in the balls. Shoveled out the driveway really good while it was melting yesterday, but then had to do it again this morning, and while it wasn’t nearly as much, it was like ice.

We’re at the top of a hill (I had a pretty good time sitting on my porch, watching people trying to come up the hill Wednesday night) so I got out fine this morning, and it’s supposed to go over 40 today, so hopefully I’ll be able to get back home this evening fingers crossed.
