So I inherited my son's PS3.

My sons got the PS4 pretty soon after it came out, so since then his PS3 has been sitting in a closet collecting dust.

Finally getting tired of looking at this dust collector I paid 300 frick’n dollars for, I decided to hook it up to the main TV.
Now I’m looking for some old school arcade/game downloads a 46yo man might be interested in.

I’m also open to first person shooter games (preferably with cheat codes that make me invincible. Is that wrong?:D)
Thank you for any suggestions.

So, you are NOT looking for actual games on disc? You’re referring to games you can download from the Playstation Network Store?

They’ve got a lot. They’ve got a lot of the Street Fighter franchise games. As well as other arcade classics like* Ikari Warriors*. They even have compilation games you can download that have anywhere from 5 to 20 or more games on one download.

So, yeah, lots of old school stuff.

It’s not arcade, but one of my favorite downloadables was “From Dust.” It is just so darned fun! You are basically a god who gets to sculpt sand, water and lava by hand like a big Zen garden so that your gormless followers have large enough islands to build villages on, and don’t drown when the tsunamis come. The interface is super simple–it’s not like Sim City or anything with menus and buttons.

Pac-Man Championship Edition is fun. It has several different game modes, including one where you’re playing in a darkened maze and can only see the walls you’re touching. (And like in every other mode, the maze halves change after you complete them.)

Moving to the Game Room

Well never mind I guess. Just spent $30 on a capcom download and my ps3 keeps telling me I have a 8001002c error code.
Sigh…

that’s the “too many files open” error…what you’re supposed to do about that, I don’t know.

A brief google search indicates that forcing a shutdown and leaving it unplugged for a few hours will force a system check that may fix it. No guarantees, though.

Thanks. I wound up doing a factory reset. (I had corrupted files)

Also, I found out I had to download another “cabinet” in conjuction with the one I already loaded to make the game work.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys!

The “Streetfighter” games are really good, especially IV.

The question is what kind of media are you interested in generally.
If you like fantasy you’ll like most RPG’s.
If you like science fiction you’ll like Mass Effect.

These days you could probably pick up most PS3 titles significantly cheaper as pre-owned discs from a physical store. It’d also save you the time of having to download them.

As for my own recommendations.

The Uncharted Games. Third Person Indiana Jone style adventures. I’d start with 2 as it’s the best one (on the PS3) and each one is more or less stand alone.

The Infamous games. Third Person sandbox shooter. Run around a big city with Electrical super-powers. My personal favourite of that console generation.

Oh it occurs to me you might not know from what you said. Third Person means you see your character on screen from above and behind as you’re controlling him.

For example. inFAMOUS 2 screenshots | Hooked Gamers

Otherwise plays pretty much like a First Person Shooter.

Ah that image linked to a collection, not an individual shot. My bad, too late to change it.

Video makes it clearer what I mean anyway.

Honestly, I just want to kill shit, and not have to worry to much about being killed myself. I do like “puzzles” and trying to figure stuff out when it comes to first or third person shooter games. (Thanks for clearing that up DeptfordX)

Depends, lots of PS3 games are under $10 now on PSN, even big budget ones. And they do still have sales on PS3 titles so sometimes you get real bargains. So to the OP, my suggestions for you are BioShock, Border Lands and Kill Zone 1 & 2.

Uncharted has architectural puzzles to solve as you’re delving around. You could set the difficulty too easy for combat as well.

I agree with bioshock. Also get the orange box, portal is way fun and funny. And borderlands and borderlands 2. You can play borderlands 2 forever.

If you just want to kill shit, Get the Call of Duty series. Start from the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (unless you like WWII weapons, in which case start from the First game in the series.)

God of War III (I think you can get I and II remastered on the PS3). Kill shit in many different ways, solve puzzles.

I second Uncharted. TONS of fun.

The entire Uncharted series is terrific. If you have an interest in westerns, I would definitely also check out Red Dead Redemption. There is plenty of stuff to shoot, a great storyline, and it looks fantastic. It is seriously one of the best games on any platform that I’ve ever played.
