I am an “ivory-tower type” in both the generic and the literal sense. I’m a lefty who teaches in a university. A lot of my friends are similarly ivory-tower types.
Among all of my academic and lefty/liberal friends, many were Bernie supporters, both in principle and, in quite a few cases, in actual voting in the primaries. Other were Hillary supporters. I don’t know the exact breakdown, because that would require too much thinking and too much trawling back through old Facebook posts, and i can’t be bothered.
But i do know that, among the people i know who supported Bernie Sanders, every single one of them began pulling for Clinton as soon as Bernie was eliminated from the primary race, and every single one of them, as far as i know, also voted for Clinton on election day. In fact, some of the most vocal and vociferous Bernie supporters turned into some of the most vocal and vociferous Hillary supporters once she became the nominee. I literally do not know a single Bernie supporter, among the dozens that i know, who stayed home or voted third party as some sort of protest or statement of principle. That includes my wife, and would have included me also, if i were an American citizen and eligible to vote.
Also, i haven’t seen any compelling evidence to suggest that Bernie supporters staying home was a significant factor in this election.
We’re at a stage where Clinton’s lead in the popular vote is approaching 2 million votes, so it’s not like she lacked individual support among the American population. And, based on the articles i’ve read about exit polls and voter turnout, it does not really seem to be the absence of “ivory-tower types” or even Bernie supporters who cost her the election in the important swing states.
If you have some evidence to the contrary, i’d be happy to see it. Otherwise, maybe you could sit back with a nice steaming mug of STFU and focus on actually doing something to fix the situation, rather than whining ineffectually about what some nebulous group of people that you’re angry with may or may not have done.
