So the new Batman vs. Superman trailer has a huge spoiler [spoilers!]

Oh for God’s sake … bring on the goddam giant spider and Brainiac wrestling Polar bears.

I’m pretty sure Jesse Eisenberg’s character isn’t the son of Lex Luthor, in the sense that his dad is the guy from the comic books. He’s playing Luthor Jr, but it doesn’t automatically follow that his dad is a bald supervillain who occasionally likes to strut around in purple and green power armor. I’m guessing Eisenberg is supposed to be “the” Lex Luthor, but they’ve tweaked his backstory to include some sort of fucked up relationship with his dad to explain why he’s evil. By the end of the movie, he’s going to end up bald and with a character-defining hatred of the guy in the blue leotard - just like comic book Luthor.

Power is armor is optional, although given the aesthetics of this franchise, if it does show up, it’s going to be colored brown and some other shade of brown.

Superman is Lawful Good and Batman is Neutral Good, or maybe even Chaotic Good sometimes

I finally saw Man of Steel over the weekend and I actually thought it was pretty good. Not perfect, but probably the best adaptation of Superman on the big screen.

Not even close. Superman, the Movie , 1978 with Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman is not only the best Superman movie ever done, but possibly the best Superhero film ever.

Nah, the best superhero film ever is either The Incredibles or The Avengers. But yes, the 1978 Superman is up there pretty high.

And Batman’s alignment is… complicated.

I’ve seen it recently. Reeves is still great, as is the music, but the film hasn’t really aged well, and both Kidder and Hackman are embarrassing to watch.

Well, The Incredibles is great but very Meta, so without a history of superhero films, it wouldnt be as fun.

Yes, those are the Top Three, we agree. I think Superman gets top spot due to it’s historical importance.

If you need some Easter eggs from the trailer:

Hey, I do like 1978 Superman, but that ending! Anyway, point is I thought Man of Steel was decent. I had a lot of hope for Batman vs. Superman, didn’t even hate the Affleck as Batman thing, but this trailer really deflated those hopes.

True, the ending of Superman was pretty bad. I think that the fundamental problem is that it’s impossible to write good stories about Superman. You need to instead write stories about Clark Kent. But while they got that for most of the 1978 film, by the end they forgot about it, and threw in a climax that could be solved by a ludicrous application of power, and then solved it that way.

IIRC, they originally didn’t write themselves into that corner and suddenly need him to fly that fast in the first movie; they were thinking of saving that for the climax of the second movie, as the only way to play can-you-top-this to the first one – and ultimately figured dangit, if we don’t use the biggest showstopper we can think of in the first movie, there maybe isn’t going to be a second one.

I always hear this, and while I’ve admittedly not read a huge number of Superman comics, he’s been in continuous publication for over seventy five years. Clearly, *someone *has figured out a way to tell interesting stories about the guy.

Exactly: They’re interesting stories about the guy. “The guy” being Clark Kent, not Superman. If you throw a problem at him that can be solved via powers, then he solves it via powers. He’s so powerful that this can never be interesting. So instead, you throw problems at him that can’t be solved via powers, like his relationship with Lois Lane.

Of course, there are still some very successful stories about him, that do focus on his powers. But those stories are still not very good, and are successful mostly because there’s a certain segment of fan that isn’t very discriminating of quality (mostly kids).

No, in my post, “the guy” referred to Superman. And, sorry, I just don’t buy that Superman’s the biggest name in the medium because people like reading stories about klutzy reporters.

Jimmy Kimmel had Ben Affleck on and showed a deleted scene from the upcoming movie: Deleted Scene from "Batman v Superman” Starring Jimmy Kimmel - YouTube

Gee, couldn’t they have made that a little longer?

Seriously, it kept missing every opportunity to end before it completely wore out its welcome.
