I’ve been out of the country for a couple of weeks, and it only just occurred to me – whatinhell happened to the investigation of the murder of Robert Blake’s wife? Have they made any arrests? What’s going on? No one here at work knows anything. A quick search of a news page turns up nothing.
What happened to the Robert Blake story is… the Chandra Levy story!
The police are still investigating the former, but the media frenzy that once surrounded that investigation has been transferred to the investigation of COngressman Condit’s alleged affair with Chandra Levy, and his possible involvement in her disappearance.
The tabloidized media can’t concentrate on more than one salacious scandal at a time. In this case, that worked to Robert Blake’s advantage. Congressman Condit has to be hoping for an even juicier story, invoilving a much BIGGEr celebrity, to come along and bump him from the headlines.
Actually, I think the real beneficiary at this point is Paula Poundstone. Sans Condit, I’m sure the tabloids would be all over that case like maggots on a carcass. They’re probably holding it in reserve, in case the Condit thing fizzles. A philandering congressman must rate higher on the titillometer[sup]1[/sup] than a possibly child molesting comedian.
Note - I hope to HELL she’s not guilty. One of the best writers of comic material around, although her delivery isn’t that great. Odd thing - when I first heard about her arrest on the radio, it was a tease in which they gave no details of what she was arrested for. To show how cynical an age we live in, I played out a whole scenario in my mind which went like: “Hmmm. She probably got busted for drugs. Well hell, she’ll be given probation, go into rehab, and 12-18 months from now, she’ll incorporate her take on rehab into her routine. Ought to be pretty funny.”
[sup]1[/sup] - I hereby claim this coining. There are no matches in google, at least with that spelling.
