Wow. It seems like just yesterday Hal was watching the TV miniseries 10.5. How our world has changed in oh so many ways since that age of innocence. {Sigh}
Thread-killing is more an art than a science. It’s also one of those things that you do better when you stop trying.
In my experience, the factors that act against threadicide are the following:
- You post regularly; some dimwit who fancies him- or herself as your cyber pal will always pop by to say Hi
- You post garbage; people here are not as bright as they think they are, and will enthusiastically engage you in an argument that you never made
- You write “How YOU doin’?”
- You are not American and you criticise America, especially gun laws
- You have a dig at the American Constitution, especially when it transpires that you haven’t actually read it
- You write a parody or even something that is vaguely non-congruous, i.e. contains a smidgeon of wit or irony; someone will get offended by it, and a surprisingly large number of people won’t get it
- You use the word irony; someone will be by to tell you you don’t know what it means
So far, the only sure-fire way of killing a thread that I have discovered is to mention the Eagles. But even that is now in danger of losing its status, as it could fall into my final category:
- You write something that becomes a Doper saying/law/rule/witticism (you know them all - I’m not going to mention them)
Out of the last 200 threads I’ve posted in (the list goes back to November), nine died after I posted.
Rate: 4.5%.
I’ve killed 7 of the last 25 threads in which I have posted, which gives me a 28% kill rate.

A. You clearly enjoy statistics (or, as we Hoosiers say, sadistics) more than I do.

You know, I notice that same thing happening to me! It’s so wonderful to know there’s another person out there I can relate to on this.
Anyway, I seem to be on a roll this month, killing only 3 out of 94 threads, for a kill rate of 3.1%

Hell, when I went to bed last night, I was sure I’d managed to kill off this thread, seeing as how it had been like 2.5 hours since my post without any replies.
