I hadn’t left the house in two days due to being super busy with my work.
So I decided to go out for a sanity walk around the block, and as I was leaving I saw Brian Tyler Cohen was live streaming, so I decided to listen on my walk.
I was walking from the streetcar stop to my apartment after work, and scrolling through Instagram on my phone. Wil Wheaton posted a shot of his TV with the 34-0 verdict, and that was my first exposure to the news. It took a minute for me to fully understand. Got home, switched on MSNBC, and fielded a call from my folks, who were also watching with rapt attention.
I was in bed, taking a nap. I got a notification on YouTube and checked it, and happened to scroll past a thumbnail mentioning the conviction.
Seeing as I’d been busy before the nap, I was happy that I totally skipped any time being anxious about the verdict.
I was at home when my brother, who was watching MSNBC, yelled out that the jury had reached a verdict that was expected in 30 minutes. So I turned on my TV and waited for the good news.
At that point, I was pretty sure it would be good news, because I firmly believed that the only probable end would be a conviction or a hung jury, and the fact that the jury had reached a verdict eliminated “hung jury” from the equation.
Threadjack: I hadn’t heard of this book until a few days ago when I heard the author interviewed on NPR. I’m about 10% into it, and I’ve learned more about tar sands already than I thought was possible for a layperson.
Reading the dope, waiting with fingers crossed.

I was at happy hour with my girlfriends. It got a lot happier. ![]()
I was home, working. I got the news here on The Dope.
I was scrolling BlueSky and it was coming in through multiple satire/humor accounts, so I was thoroughly uncertain until I could sit down and pull up the big news networks.
I hate that I don’t cable, I hear Fox News has been an absolute hoot.
Still somewhat in disbelief that the verdict was guilty on all 34 counts.
Not working. Interneting, reading on line newspapers. Procrastinating basically.
Same.
Immediately texted my sister, in deepest dark red Iowa, so we could rub our hands in glee and chortle in delight. HS grad, retired union (Steelworkers) factory worker~she hates him with a passion that is a delight to see.
I learned this when I opened the thread just now, sitting at home on my futon.
Walking around my living room and kitchen getting ready for work. I have the TV on the news running in the background most of the time and I happened to catch the result when it came down.
Normally I work 3rd shift, but the boss has me working a swing shift during the summer right now. Under normal circumstances I probably would have been asleep when this happened.
Mr. Rilch was on the phone with someone else, both waiting for the verdict. I pulled up CNN and Fox News, wanting to compare and contrast their coverage. Saw that Fox had a live feed from the courthouse; stayed on it and saw Trump’s harangue live and uncensored.
I have to warn y’all, there will be more trouble from the right, the MAGAs. I don’t know how much or what kind of trouble they’re really capable of. But they’re the ones with the guns.
I was at my dining table, finishing up supper. My wife had just gotten up and saw the news on her iPad.
Needless to say, we were both ecstatic.
I got the news a bit late, in a little village in the alps. We were near the end of our May tour of Eastern Europe, and I was very proud of myself for avoiding TV ‘n’ Trump (and the Dope) for almost the entire time.
But my wife checked her phone, and, as I stepped into the shower on our last morning, she matter-of-factly said “Guilty. All 34 counts.”
I wonder if Cheeto Face appreciates how happy he made a huge percentage of the country.
He doesn’t care about losers and haters.
I was walking to my bus leaving work. I was taking photos as it was an amazing day in Chicago with brilliant blue skies and wanted to show friends how nice it was after all the rain we’ve had this Spring.
