I was in my bed, listening to the five o’clock news and drinking coffee. Copenhagen time.
At work, we were all following closely for the announcement, and thanks to SDMB members’ super-fast, on-the-spot coverage, especially @rocking_chair, it appeared on the SDMB thread at least 15 seconds before it showed up for us on CNN online and NYT online here on the west coast.
I was on an airplane with no internet service so I didn’t hear until we landed, a few hours after it happened.
Scrolling down my YouTube homepage on my iPad and being pleasantly surprised for probably the first time ever that the YouTube algorithm had a breaking news category it insisted on showing me called “Jury finds TFG guilty on 34 counts.” I’ve spent years teaching YouTube that I don’t want it to show me news from networks, so it almost never shows me breaking news, and every other time I’ve been annoyed when it does.
I was browsing various Discord channels when the news broke, although I can’t recall the specific one I was reading.
Yes, I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the news.
I was watching the News.
I was in bed. I had retired at about 11:30 AM, with my alarm set for 7:30 PM. I woke up at about 2:30, and checked the thread in P&E to see how long it had gotten. When I reached the post describing Judge Merchan announcing that the jury would be sent home at 4:30 (EDT, which would be 1:30 PDT where I am), I decided that I’d read a few more posts and then try to go back to sleep.
Then I saw Aspenglow’s post that began “Verdict!” and my heart started to pound. It took all of my resolve to not swipe my phone over to a headlines app, but I forced myself to read the thread post by post. I teared up a little when I saw Count 1 - Guilty, and continued to read until I saw 34 guilty verdicts.
That’s when I texted Michaela “The America-hating fuckstick is officially a convicted felon!” at 2:52 PDT. Then I finished reading the thread up to where it had reached, poured myself a celebratory glass of bourbon, and went back to bed.
Why were so many of us in a bed in the middle of the afternoon?
I was in bed because I work from 10:30 PM until 7:00 AM.
I was scrolling the dope and twitter and listening to MSNBC all at the same time. I first saw the news that the jury would be going home and felt disappointed, but that was very quickly followed by the news that a verdict was reached. I was furiously refreshing the dope and twitter when I saw the news on twitter.
Then I came here to talk to you guys about it.
That’s, legit a good reason.
I just practically live in bed. I ain’t got no shame.
I have to wake up to take a nap some days.
Under a cat in the living room working on a word puzzle.
My wife and I were watching MSNBC. They were reporting that the jury was about to be dismissed for the day when Nicole Wallace said there was a verdict. We were beside ourselves with excitement and anxiety. Then giddy when the verdicts were announced, one by one.
In my defence, I was only thinking about going to bed. Also, it was just before 10pm in my time zone, so not really ‘afternoon’
.
A BBC news notification popped up on my tablet saying a verdict had been reached. So I stayed up to see what it was, tuned into the SDMB. My main source of everything American. I wonder if that gives me a skewed perception of your great country?
I was on the porch with our dogs when my gf (who was working in her home office) texted me GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS!!! She and her coworkers were whooping it up. The dogs didn’t know what was up, but I got them treats.
I was working at the living room table with my phone charging in another room and me ignoring the news dings to get work done. (In my experience, most news dings are eminently ignorable. Who decides what’s BREAKING NEWS! vs. ordinary news anyway?)
Once I sent something to my boss, I took a brief break for the Dope. I was reading one of the many Trump political threads when someone’s post said GUILTY! (slightly off-topically, but not complaining) and I went for my phone, which was filled with news notifications.
I was at work when I got a text from a bud. Oh, happy day!! A few of us went out last night to one of our favorite watering holes to celebrate!!
I was driving home from my mum’s house. (~22:00 UK time)
Tailgating at Gillette Stadium prior to the Rolling Stones concert. What a night! Mick didn’t mention anything about it though.
Working. Mrs. Martian texted me to say that the jury reached a verdict. I checked CNN.com and saw that the jury had asked for a half hour to finish the paperwork. Didn’t want to watch live (too nerve-wracking), checked CNN.com until the verdict tracker registered the first guilty verdict. Turned on MSNBC and reveled in the remaining tide of guilty verdicts then texted Mrs. Martian back with this:
