Well, I do think it still matters in the sense of who controls the committees. Personally, I don’t want to see Sen. James “Global warming is a Hoax” Inhofe continuing to head the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works!
I should also add that I am cautiously optimistic. While Virginia and Montana are both close, they are not Florida-close. I.e., we are talking something like 0.3 - 0.5% differences, not the well-less-than-0.1% differences in the Florida Presidential race in 2000. To make up a difference of 0.3 to 0.5% with almost all the regular votes counted, you really need to have some pretty skewed distribution in the remaining precincts and absentee ballots or to have a recount find some pretty dramatic errors.
Even without McCain as an independent, there is the small but very real chance of an electoral tie (at 269 electoral votes apiece). There were several possible scenarios in the 2004 election that would have produced that result.
Folks really don’t think through all the implications of these propositions. I mean, what if they cloned Scarlett Johanssen, Agelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston?
I wonder how they would react to a clone of Bush?
Well, I’ll be a macaca’s uncle-- it looks like the Dems will take the Senate. Good for them. I was hoping for a takeover of the House, but I kinda sorta wanted the Pubbies to retain the Senate since the one thing I like about Bush is his judicial appointees, but what the heck. A close Senate would’ve made it impossible for those to get thru anyway. Might as well take the whole damn thing and show Bush what he has wrought for the Republican party. This is a good day for the US. A very good day!
In another victory, Arizona voted to NOT ban same sex marriage. As of this morning the AZ secretary of state site shows 51.6% against with all but one precinct in the state reporting.
Thanks, guys! You set a high bar there so please remind me to try to be as gracious the next time my people lose. Graciousness in defeat does not come easily to me.
I agree. My party has lost its way, and needed this little shocker to bring them to their collective senses. C’mon, Republicans! Cut yourself loose from the shackles of the Religious Right and take those faltering steps towards the center. Take your noses out of my business and your hands off my wallet (the latter applies to the Democrats as well!).
The Reagan revolution is dead. Long live whatever we are going to get now!
Don’t bother. Even one of the Democratic Party headquarters bigdomes said that is wasn’t a Democratic victory, it was a Republican defeat.
The party leader, GW, has badly damaged the US standing in the world, killed who knows how many people by bringing turmoil to Iraq, and will decimate the Republican Party if you let him.
As a uniter his only success has been to unite most of the world against the US foreign policy.
But isn’t that ten percent of the population?
(looking it up) I guess I was wrong. However, on the one hand, Montana’s population has tripled since I last looked it up. On the other hand, more people live in my suburban (partially rural) county.
Wow. Just… WOW. That’s so wrong, on so many levels… I wouldn’t even know where to start.
Update on the Virginia Senate race:
Ed Gillespie needs to do something about his turkey wattle.
That is all.
Yeah. The cloning bit I can almost understand. If there’s one message the anti-2 advertising hammered home, it was that the amendment would somehow legalize/condone/promote human cloning.
What I want to know is the identity of the mysterious “they” who want to create a full-grown Osama bin Laden clone and presumably wreak some sort of havoc with it. Probably those shifty Democrats!
You liked Harriet Miers? Or do you consider that an anomaly?
That was the jeebus talking.
We prefer to be called “Progressives”.
Makes our hatred of the US and our embrace of the terrorists sound. . .well. . .classier.
Somehow.
CNN just announced that Rumsfeld is stepping down! Wow. This is like watching a train
wreck in slow motion. I recently told my friend, a die-hard Repo (after I failed to convince him
not to vote for these bozos) that his party will be unrecognizable in 10-15 years. My timetable
may be conservative tho.
Got a cite? It’s not on the CNN website (or anywhere else I’ve found). Was this speculation on Bush’s talk in a few minutes?
