Zza Zza Gabor had a long Hollywood career, but what do you think of when you hear her name mentioned? Most likely, “that’s the entitled celebrity who slapped the Beverly Hills cop." Slappee, or slapper, it’s bad press.
John Mulaney and Jim Gaffigan. Based on the stand-up specials I see pushed on Netflix, I think stand-up has moved on quite a bit since Chris Rock’s heyday.
Based on the recent videos released, Jada seems quite mean. I don’t know why Will hasn’t moved on from her. It doesn’t excuse his behavior, but he probably needs a hug. Chris Rock may be just so used to having bad shit happen to him that he is immune to it now. If I were him I would sue though, and quick -get in when people are unstable.
Hmm, interesting. I don’t follow the Smiths (or much any celebrity news), but I just watched a couple Jada clips where she discusses Will’s slap. I get the feeling that this may be a celebrity who is planning a high profile Hollywood divorce and is garnering public support.
Whoa, I haven’t seen anything about Jada since it happened. Until I get a chance to look it up, can you tell me if she’s throwing him under the bus? I supposed people who really know her and care about her will support her but as long as I’ve been aware of her she’s seemed a real bitch. And certainly not a delicate flower/ victim.
I’d say she’s throwing him under the bus, but in subtle, calculated manner.
I don’t have much to go on, but that’s my impression, too. It’s very obvious from the video of the incident itself (very clear from the Bill Maher clip upthread, where slow motion is used to good effect) that Will just laughed it off until he got the evil stink-eye from Jada, who looked like someone definitely unable to take a joke.
Any links? I haven’t looked for a couple of days, but for a while, I had not seen any response from Jada.
Reporter John Stossel said the question most people ask him about when they meet him for the first time is the incident where he was slapped by a pro wrestler in the 80s questioning whether or not pro wrestling was “fake”.
(The wrestler in question was “Dr D” David Schultz who should NOT be confused with the Olympic amateur wrestler with the same name. They are two very different people.)
And others but even more to the point - those more well known than him? Most of the public barely know them. The awareness of stand up comics by the general public is low. Of this happening at the Oscars huge.
Damn. If that clip is all on the up & up (and it looks pretty real to me) … that does not appear to be reflective of a healthy relationship. I mean, what Jada & Will are up to is not my business, but why is this clip even out in the public?
And I’ve never heard of this incident, even though I know very well who John Stossel is (unfortunately)
All that DCnDC listed plus she inspired and was mentioned in several songs back then.
She was the “it girl” of the black community at the time. A movie star dating Tupac. She was definitely well known.
That’s not really all that illuminating a comparison. Google “Best Zsa Zsa Gabor movies,” and you get lists that go:
- Moulin Rouge (1952)
- Touch of Evil (1958)
- Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Gabor was the original Kardashian: famous for being famous. Chris Rock has a legitimately successful body of work behind him. He’s actually done something to be remembered for, other than empty celebrity.
I said she had a long Hollywood career. I never said she was a good actress; she wasn’t. Sure, she was a media darling much like the Kardashians. But, I don’t believe even the Kardashian clan would like to be remembered for a slap.
That’s great, but the question wasn’t, “Would they like to be remembered for a slap,” it was, “Is this what Chris Rock is going to be remembered for in thirty years?” And looking at Zsa Zsa Gabor isn’t a useful predictor, here, because unlike Chris Rock, there’s not a whole lot in Zsa Zsa’s career that’s worth remembering.
Socialite/lesser actor sister of Eva Gabor. I didn’t remember anything she had done, including slapping a cop.
Chris Rock is considerably more famous than either in my estimation. It’s not even close, really. They’re popular, very successful stand-ups (Gaffigan more so). Chris Rock is a star.
But this might be perception bias. I’ve seen Rock’s entire career.
She also slapped a cop, was charged with multiple crimes, was found guilty at trial, was sentenced to jail and carried on an appeal that lasted nearly a year. If Chris Rock chooses a course of action that keeps this in the news for a full 12 months, yeah, maybe it will be a significant portion of his legacy.
I am aware of both of these people and didn’t recall these incidents.
