So You Think You Can Dance -- SYTYCD -- Summer 2011

Emmy Nominations are in. 5 of the 6 Best Choreography nods are from SYTYCD:

Mia Michaels (Alice in Mia-Land "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic / “When We Dance” / “This Bitter Earth - On the Nature of Daylight”)

Stacey Tookey (“Mad World” / “Sundrenched World” / “Heaven is a Place on Earth”)

Travis Wall ("Collide / “How It Ends” / “Fix You”)

Tabitha & Napoleon D’umo (“Scars” / “Fallin” / “Outta Your Mind”)

Mandy Jo Moore (“Oh Yeah” / “Boogie Shoes” / “I Surrender”)

The other nod was for Dancing w/the Stars

Actually, it looks like the show got nods in Reality Series (competition) and Reality Host as well! The 1st for either category, IIRC. With a Lighting Design nod, too, that’s 7 total.

Those who don’t necessarily watch the results show – do so tonight. Jason Samuels Smith is on, and he’s a phenomenal tap-dancer.

All-Stars announced

Alex Wong was supposed to be back, but he injured his other tendon last week. So … Jesse whatshisface who’s judging this week is going to be an all-star. For one week only, I assume.

I’m not surprised Ryan got sent home, I am surprised with Alex, however. I guess his solo was weak (all male contemporary looks the same to me) but that was his first time in the bottom three, as opposed to Rick and the other guy. They’ve been there every week so far.

Not to mention actually hinting that some of the problems may have been with the choreography and not just the dancers. I’ll pay extra for more of that.

I really don’t thing the solos have all that much to do with who goes (despite what they say.) During Wednesday’s episode Nigel said something about Alex having been ‘carried’ by his partner previous weeks. With that as a background, they might have felt he was ‘overdue’ to be eliminated, so seized their first chance.

This is the judges’ last chance to decide who stays and who goes, isn’t it? Doesn’t it go to straight audience vote once we’re down to the top ten?

I think they were just waiting for him and his partner to make it into the bottom three so they could vote him off. Sasha is such a strong dancer that she kept them out of the bottom three all this time.

That had to be a joke, about Jesse.

My prediction for top three, in no particular order:

The little '40’s-era pixie- Melanie?
Sasha
Marco

There may be better dancers but they don’t have the appeal of these three. And thank you, Neal Patrick Harris, for having the balls to give some real critiques. He was more insightful than any of the past guest judges, and frankly gives Cacklin’ Mary and Nigel a run for their money.

I loved last nights 1st hip-hop to “Look at me now.” I thought it was great.

I also loved Neil Patrick Harris as a judge. I remember he did great on American Idol a few years ago. And I’m glad he called out Tyce’s airplane dance.

Yeah, phew, because it just meant an extra helping of Sasha. Yum.

Sounds like they’ll be using different all-stars every week – cool! Think we’ll see Travis as a dancer and not a choreographer? (Hm, or both?)

Holy crap, Blush is terrible. Not even the mellifluous tones of Snoop Dogg could redeem them. I think the lead singer is tone deaf.

I thought they’d get rid of the other girl- sorry, I’m terrible with their names- the one that always wears a bra for the elimination show. Eh, she’ll probably go next week.

So it’s not just that I’m way out of the target age for that kind of music? I was trying to imagine the circumstance under which anyone would deliberately choose to listen to that song, if a song is what it was.

/returns to shooing kids off her lawn

I read that as shooting kids off your lawn. Damn, girl, you’re badass!

I’m out of their target market too, but, man, that was horrible. I said to my wife that I think she’s lip syncing and she replied back that it had to be live because there’s no way something as awful as that could have been pre-recorded.

Also, was anyone else bored silly by that first hip-hop number? I thought it was absolutely abysmal but all the judges were raving about it.

I absolutely loved it. I didn’t love the song (I prefer the Karmin cover of it) but the piece itself I thought was great.

As to Blush, I thought they were horrid. I wish they’d just bring back those ballroom world champions.

I realized why everyone likes Pasha so much and why I’ve come to like him: he’s one of the few male ballroom dances who’s able to do the dances without looking so girlie. Nearly every other guy who does the salsa, samba, whatever, they all look girlie in their little hills and tight pants, but not Pasha.

Also, he makes a lot of the lifts look effortless. It’s jarring when you can see a dancer mentally preparing to perform a lift before it happens.

What on earth was that thing they called Blush? I kept waiting for Snoop to come in and rescue us…and he didn’t!

I, too, was expecting the girl who wears bras to be eliminated. I though her solo was weak. She doesn’t really stand out at all for me as a dance so that’s really all I had to go on.

Melanie and Pasha’s Viennese waltz was the highlight of this week for me.

I loved this week’s dances with the all-stars. Sasha and Twitch were so great together I wish they could dance together every week. This was the one and only time I’ve ever enjoyed Jess, for some reaon that routine brought tears to my eyes it was so emotional. And my other fave was the nightmare routine with Rickey as the monster or whatever, it was so dark and demented. And Melanie was amazing as usual.

I really thought Jordan would be the one to go and was very surprised that Clarice went instead. I really wanted to see what she can do with a good partner, instead of tiny dancer Jess. They sent the right guy home. I’d like to see Jess and Jordan go next week, but I worry that it will be Rickey since he’s been in the bottom the last few weeks.

Glad I found this thread now, I haven’t had anyone to talk to about the show.
