So You Think You Can Dance -- SYTYCD -- Summer 2011

I don’t understand their love for Ryan. I was shocked- shocked, I tell you- that she didn’t go home.

Did Nigel screw up when he was critiquing, what’s his name, Chris? He said they liked the woodpecker piece, but that was Robert’s. I think he forgot who he was talking to.

I’m hypnotized by Kristen Chenowith’s eyes.

You’re right! And the woodpecker routine was two weeks ago.

Let me just say that the two featured dances on the results show (whiich I just watched) were just out of this world amazing.

I was telling my wife that Jess certainly is an excellent dancer, but being so shor is just not that asthetically pleasing in couples dancing.

Not only that, but he has some of the strangest facial expressions. He comes across as very insincere, as if he’s been performing so long that he doesn’t know how not to perform. A couple weeks ago when Nigel mentioned Clarence Clemons had suffered a stroke, they cut to the dancers and he had clasped his hands together and was gazing toward the heavens, in a mock display of prayer. It was cringeworthy. I think his partner isn’t thrilled she’s stuck with him.

A local newspaper columnist, who is more prone to writing about politics or books or philosophy or life in general, hardly ever about TV, devoted his column yesterday to SYTYCD. Bottom line: doesn’t like this season’s changes.

Did all the choreographers get together at the beginning of the season and decide they all hate men or something? I mean seriously, at least two dances a show are about how the girls are going to kill men, or break up with them, or something.

Honestly, all the dances but that last one to Celine Dion’s song was very forgettable.

eta: Oh, and 99% of the time if the choreographer didn’t tell me what the dance was about ahead of time I’d have no clue. Like with the boys group number, even with the explanation I didn’t see it.

I thought it was a weak episode. I normally watch with a book in my lap for commercials & when the judges get too long-winded and gushy, but several times I found my attention drifting away from even the dances this time.

And, yeah, I’m tired of the killer women dances.

I’m also really tired of contemporary dances about the angst of breaking up. Man, do they over do that.

I’m tired of the expectation that every dance has to tell a story. People, there’s nothing wrong with a dance just being a dance.

It was fun seeing Travis on the panel, though. And he was good with actual content in his comments – unlike these gimmick guest judges.

I’m fine if a dance is just a dance. Like you said, it doesn’t need to tell a story. I’m just saying that when the choreographer told me it told a story, I didn’t get it.

I was torn about Travis being on the panel. On one had, he actually had something to say and didn’t sound like he skimmed a thesaurus that morning. OTOH, if he’s judging that means we don’t’ get a Travis Wall dance that night, and I always greatly enjoy his pieces.

I really wish they’d stop with the celebrity judges. Apparently Ms. Electra had a huge background and dance, or so my wife told me. I’ve always just known her as a bad actress, but she really didn’t add anything whatsoever to the panel.

Amen! The story of this slow waltz is … that it’s a slow waltz!

But I can see two elements that might push them towards the story, though. First, the choreographers no doubt notice that the ‘emotional hooks’ of the story get noticed and talked about and praised more – especially by the non-technical oriented judges – so their egos

Second, when they’re well done, the audience really reacts to them. I think, in general, the dancers get more votes for a well-danced ‘story’ than for ‘just’ a well-danced dance. More buzz about ‘the dance with the guy locking the girl out of his door’ than ‘the hot salsa.’

WTF was up with Nigel’s clunky and unnecessary shout-out to Kim Kardashian last night? Some sort of cross-promotional business?

I like Travis better as a choreographer.

I don’t disagree with who went home last night. Nigel was correct: Chris does amazing solos, he was the best last night, but when it’s your what, third time in the bottom three, you’re leaving. I did feel bad for Ashley though, because you could easily see that she knew she was going.

Yeah, wth was with the shout out to the Kardashian. WTF does she have to do with the show?

Maybe she’s a future judge (shudder)

I’d refuse to watch that episode.

For the life of me, I cannot remember: Do they always vote off partners?

All the boys and girls voted off this year have been partners. But I seem to think in the past a few times that sometimes the girl from one pairing and the boy from another pairing would be going home and the two who were left would pair up.

They sometimes mix and match after eliminations come from different teams, but it’s just as often that both heading out are eliminated together (often because their recurrence in the bottom several times)

Lots and lots of “meh” last night – though god bless Louis for “There is no story, it’s just a tango.” Marko and Melanie are amazing, Ricky and Ryan annoy the living hell out of me (well, Ryan does), and everyone else is in between.

That said – very much looking forward to seeing who the All Stars are and how that works out. I hope they find some little tiny girl to partner Jess with – I’ll be curious to see what it looks like when he’s not being forced to do awkward lifts that leave everyone wondering if he’ll drop the girl or just fall over. And I’ll be curious to see what his partner looks like when she’s dancing with someone who’s a better physical match for her.

Sounds like they’re going to assign an all-star to each of the top ten, unlike last year when they mixed and matched all-stars every week, which I loved as a strategy.

I thought it was fairly meh. I had a lot more to say last night but I completely forgot it all.

The guest judge was more entertaining than last week, although I still wish they’d get rid of that.

I liked the vulture dance.

I hated hate HATED the first hip hop, about the Ugandan child soldiers or whatever. It was just a mess of a dance from the get-go. Maybe he knew the dance wasn’t good and he thought if he shrouded it in “deepness” he’d get a pass.

I though Jessie Tyler Ferguson did a great job as a judge last night. Most everything I thought, he said, though he was very supportive with his criticism.

Loved both dances Travis choreographed. Since Sonja was a judge, I missed her as a choreographer.

I think Jordan and her partner whose name I forget at the moment, Jess and Clarice, and Ryan and Rickey will find themselves in the bottom three tonight, with Ryan and Rickey leaving.

Yeah, lots of meh from me, too.

The hip hop routine about he refugee kids in Africa was terrible. I just kept watching it wondering when the train wreck was going to end. The dance was dull and the dancers sucked. I am glad that the judges didn’t get taken in by the political message.

Jessie Tyler Ferguson was a great judge. I would like to see him on again. He actually had criticisms and helpful comments instead of just being a cheerleader like so many of the guest judges are.

I loved the vulture dance. The tango was excellent. I also enjoyed the Janis Joplin number.
