So You Think You Can Dance -- SYTYCD -- Summer 2012

They like those untrained guys. Remember Legacy? And What’sHisName?

I really like her on New Girl and a few other little things, but I have to assume after the show most people backstage (Nigel, Cat, Mary) went ‘Well, that was a waste’. I can imagine during the show the backstage people (producers/directors were going :smack:) Looking at her wiki page very, very quickly, I don’t see anything in it about dancing and if all they wanted to do was promote New Girl, they could have just had her sing something or skip around on the stage for a few minutes.
I thought it was funny when after the second or third time when they came to her that Cat finally said “Let me guess, you’re speechless again”. I wish she would have rolled her eyes at her because it was getting old.

If this show is anything like Idol, the judges drift in and out dress rehearsal earlier in the day and that gives them a chance to work on their commentary*. Zooey should have used that opportunity to come up with some BS then or ask some of the other judges for help…or went on youtube and watched what judges said in previous years.

*remember when Paula commented about a singers second song after they had just performed their first song.

Hey, if they’re going to have a completely fucking useless judge, I’m glad it was on a night when there was not actually any judging going on.

I suppose that was probably the point. They did kind of whore themselves out last night and still not really manage to make much of a fuss over their 200th episode.

So Zooey is not doing much acting on the show. She really is that vapid. Who knew.

I like the pale girl with the 20’s vibe.

That girl’s so pale she’s reflective.

I just caught the last 3 group numbers last night. Loved Travis Wall’s piece, hated Sonya’s, and actually liked Mia Michaels’ piece. Was that a wig she was wearing?

Reflective? In that last number her legs damn near glowed in the dark!

I found it distracting. (There was another quite pale girl, over to the right, but she was nothing on the flapper girl.)

Maybe she should try some spray on tan on her legs to blend in better?

When the girls’ piece ended and they were all standing in a line with Kat at the center, it struck me that they were all farily… breasty for dancers. But I chose not to say anything. Then a minute later:

My wife: Something unusual about the girls this season- they all have larger-than-normal tits for dancers.
Me: I was just thinking that!

I consider myself a fan of her stuff and I agree, she was awful.

It’s gonna take a while to start learning names – though at this point I’ve got Cyrus (natch) and flapper girl is Amelia.

Neither of the male ballet dancers did particularly well, IMHO – the blond Aussie in particular, I was looking at him thinking “has he never done partnering before?” And the female ballet dancer seemed way overanimated to me, though the judges seemed to like her.

Didn’t care for the Titanic number Travis choreographed – it just seemed frenetic to me. Did like Sonja’s piece, which was, indeed, way more romantic than her stuff from previous seasons. Good for her if her love life is in a good place.

The group number for the opening was really cool, though obviously taped in advance – have they always done that?

I was actually moved to tears by the Sonja number.

I thought the Titanic number was stunning. It really put those two on my radar.

I am amazed at how good the dancing is right out the gate. If I’m already really feeling a lot of the routines, I can only wonder how good it’s going to be as the season progresses.

Cole’s paso doble was AWESOME. He was already a favorite of mine but I’m liking him even more now.

I don’t think I like Tyce’s choreography that much, because that number did nothing for me.

I’m really ready to see Will go home. I’m so distracted by his obnoxious personality that I can’t even fairly evaluate his dancing.

I also really enjoyed the Paso Doble. So dynamic. Other favorites from last night were the Viennese Waltz (so dreamy and floaty - it was just pretty) and the flapper girl (Amelia?) with the Cure song. Travis’s and Sonja’s pieces - eh. Sonja’s piece was unusually gentle for her stuff. The Swiss ballet guy was totally out of place in the Latin ballroom dance.

One of the things I really like about this show is that they actually offer constructive criticism to the dancers on occasion. Such a pleasant contrast from the most recent couple of seasons of Idol.

Overall, I thought it was a really promising first performance show! I’m looking forward to seeing more.

To fully indulge into my chauvanistic roots.

Amelia. Damn. Dat Azz… ::pshew!::

To me, it was immediate within the first 15 seconds whether or not the routine was going to work. My favorites were the Dumpster routine with Amelia, and the Broadway with Glitch. None of the others were really remarkable.

That was a fun dance and Amelia is emerging as an early favorite for me. Cole did a great job.
I didn’t love the titanic dance. Too many hard moves for such a soft song.
Cyrus did better than I thought he would, but I didn’t like that dance much.

That paso doble was really great, but something about Cole really rubs me the wrong way. His facial expression just screams “pretentious douchebag” to me.

Tyce continues his longstanding tradition of boring me to tears with his Broadway routines. Hated it.

Amelia really impressed me in the dumpster cat number (putting it that way sounds kind of dirty, now that I look at it).

Travis just keeps getting better. He’s 24??? Kid’s talented.

They normally did the group routines to open the results episodes. Without that I think it may be easier and more fair to earlier pairings to tape the group dance ahead of time.

FYI - Travis will have his own show on Oxygen starting.. um… 7/31 or something. It looks interesting.

The routine with the alky and they’re fighting. Didn’t work for me as a story. If the story was a couple living together and they’re starting to get on each other’s nerves it fits better with the dance.

The routine with the Aussie and Alexa dressed in red. At our house it was the “Fiddler Crab Mating Dance”

It is quite clear the women are better than the men this year.

The Titanic. The dancing was better than the choreography.

The Paso Doble. I had to limit myself to rewatching it twice.

Ah, right, that makes sense. I had the sense they used to be live, but wasn’t thinking about the fact that they’d be on the results show.

Yeah. He’s getting his own show too.

Humbling moment of the week, right there.
