:smack: Yeah, I misspoke – that’s what I meant, by saying he favored Chehon, did he ensure a win for Cyrus. :smack:
One thing I forgot to say last night – it was cool to see actual ballet by two finalists trained in the genre last night, a first, I think. (The naughty ballerina a few seasons ago had ballet, I think, but her partner either wasn’t a finalist or wasn’t trained in ballet, I forget which.)
Uh, why did they bother asking people to vote last week? No mention of those results at all. I could see maybe if they combined last week’s tally with the ones from last night, otherwise…
And, yes, I thought Nigel’s comments on his not voting for Cyrus were utterly weird. First of all, I’d assume the judges didn’t even vote (outside of the who tosave from the bottom three earlier in the season.) For me it almost came across as him being worried about being a racist.
And, yes, I think the ultimate result will be to encourage people to vote for Cyrus.
OTOH, I imagine all four of the finalists have had so much good exposure to the people who matter – choreographers, whover it is hires the dancers for shows – that it really doesn’t matter that much who wins the title.
I actually don’t find Cyrus all that much fun to watch. It’s really awkward to see his partner(s) really exert themselves while he’s clearly been given the bare minimum to dance. It contributes to either very unbalanced or very watered-down routines.
Did they? I didn’t remember any phone numbers being given out. It’s possible that I just missed them.
Even if they did, they wouldn’t count any more than anybody else’s votes.
Except, of course, for the fact that the winners get $250,000 (and their faces on Gatorade bottles, but does anybody ever remember seeing any previous winners’ faces on Gatorade?) and the other finalists get zero - well, they do get to go on tour (and get paid something for that). The only time winners were guaranteed “exposure” was when Adam Shankman was directing the Oscars and promised the top male and female that season that they would be dancing on the broadcast.
On the other hand, where you finish on the show isn’t necessarily that important in terms of your future. Probably the most famous person to be a contestant on SYTYCD never even made it to the finals - Heather Morris (Brittany on Glee; she was on Season 2 of SYTYCD, but got cut just before the top 20).
There is another possible reason Nigel said he would vote for Chehon; perhaps he wants Cyrus to win to make it easier to get Chehon back as an All-Star next season (for some strange reason, winners don’t tend to be All-Stars; it could be that somebody thinks that they would influence the voting too much, as people would be voting for the All-Star rather than the current contestant).
I’m disappointed in Cyrus. At the beginning of the season I thought he was great. His audition (the auditions of all of the Dragonhouse crew in fact) was my favorite audition of the year. In the beginning I was happy that he was obviously getting a lot of votes, but he just never really got very good. I don’t think that he could have even made it to Vegas on any of his non-hip-hop routines; I would wince watching some of his partner dances, and I didn’t understand why the judges were praising him. Chehon is a much better dancer (though not as well-rounded as Cole was), and deserves to win.
I think this is one of my favorite finale shows ever. I loved the Tayeh/Scott opening group number, and for the most part I really enjoyed the judges choices.
I am thrilled the Ballet dancers won! Ballet is just so foundational for so many types of dance that it’s wonderful to see versatility rewarded. Both Elena and Chehon wow’d me this season. Congrats!
Er…not only do they no longer have the Gatorade bottle prize (apparently), but if I heard Cat’s description of the prizes correctly, it appears that the two winners split $250,000, rather than each getting that amount.
Hmmm…the fact that both winners happen to be ballet dancers brings out the conspiracy theorist in me; is it possible that there’s some mysterious nationwide “ballet clique” that spread the word around to vote for these two? (Then again, Nigel did say that Eliana was the favorite of every choreographer in Vegas.)
I love Cole, I was sorry to see him go, I am still in awe of him. I thought though, that Chehon deserved the win because he was beginning to really shine at the time that Cole had a miss with the Cha Cha. From there it was Chehon’s to lose, and he was right to choose the Argentine Tango, an exquisite routine, a little light on actual Argentine steps, but really beautiful, gorgeous soloing and effortless lifts and a real emotional connection with Anya.
I really “saw” Elaina when she did the Cha Cha. The routine wasn’t perfect, mainly because Cyrus is such a beginner to this type of movement, but Elaina isn’t supposed to be able to look that great, and really selling the dance even though it was out of her genre. Then when she took on the Quickstep it was beautiful, I just love a ballet dancer’s top line and shoulders. Gorgeous! In her style she was simply untouchable, and getting Alex Wong to partner was a stroke of brilliance. She could match him in technique so well and their chemistry was mature and very beautiful to see.
No, mainly because in seasons 2, 4, and 6, the top two were both men.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was because there were too many complaints that the winner got $250,000 and second place got nothing, and they wanted to be sure that, if there were two prizes, it didn’t go to two men or to two women.
One thing we’ll never know; did either of the two runners-up get more votes than the other gender’s winner? In Season 4, the top female (Katee Shean - er, I mean, “Season 4’s Katee”), who got a $50,000 bonus, finished behind the second-place male (Twitch), who got nothing, and there were a number of complaints.
I loved that. Not only was the routine really cool, but it was great getting to see Christopher Scott dance. He’s been a wonderful addition to the choreographer’s pool for these last few years. Plus, he’s a total cutie.
Christopher Scott wins the Stealth Choreographer award- the guy who least looks like he’d be a hip hop choreographer.
Sonia wins the Makeover award- I thought she looked stunning last night; in past years she would let her freak flag fly but she’s undergone a transformation recently.
