Some fat people are their own worst enemies

I think then that the OP needs a Super Sized order of Mind Your Own Fucking Business™ with a ginormous side order of Shut The Fuck Up.Patent Pending

Fuck your freedom of choice, sometimes people need to have their choices reduced for them.

Spoken like a true socialist … sheesh.

Why do some people need their governments wiping their ass all the time?

Fuck you, you judgemental and illiterate waste of DNA.

I wonder if you’ve ever had any education besides the spoon feeding you seem to have gotten from Bill O’Reilly.

For Chula and Fretful Porpentine

I was one of the posters talking about how healthy food costs more than junk food. I would like to point out I don’t live in the states. Just because there are price indices that apply to your region of the world, please do not apply to others, we personally pay 3.99/lb for broccoli in the summer! In the winter it can go up to 4.99/lb. :frowning: That is just one example.

And for a proper wellrounded diet you need more than lean meat and vegetables.

However I cannot argue with the fact that eating our usually is more expensive than buying food at a supermarket.

Because otherwise we would have a system like the US with extreme poverty, extreme illiteracy, people being murdered in big numbers and an obese population - all in a supposedly developed nation.
(by the way I don’t for one minute think that I live in perfect country - this is the reactionary in my socialist bones)

Yep.

Believe it. Even though I live in a major city, I live in a college neighborhood. Bars and pizza shops are the only food sources nearby. There is neither a banana nor a rice cake to be found around here.

And I don’t have a car.

The closest market is a long walk and a train ride away. And the market is pretty crappy. Getting an armload of crappy and overpriced groceries there is a major time and effort commitment, and I’m rarely happy with the results.

The alternative to going there is to shop at http://www.peapod.com. It’s a good service, except that with the cost of delivery and tip, and the $50 minimum, it’s a hit in the wallet. And often 3 or 4 items I’ve ordered are out of stock, and there’s a mistake on a few others. (Last time I ordered, they were out of asparagus, the ground beef ended up being pork, and the fresh roma tomatoes were moldy steak tomatoes that I had to throw out.)

Nonetheless, this has turned out to be the best option. Even still, what with the minimum purchase, I only order from there every few weeks, and foods that I consider healthy go bad in just a few days. Frozen meats and pasta/rice make up the bulk of my diet.

But I’ve made my choice. I will not move, nor will I get a car, so I’m happy to make due with the lame options available.

Fuck you, you judgemental and illiterate waste of DNA.

If someone like you thinks I’m a waste of DNA, Mockingbird, then I must be doing something right

No one’s “offended” at this silly attitude of yours, we just disagree with it.

Again, as a fitness professional who works at the university level, BELIEVE me, if it were just as simple as “eat less, exercise more,” the weight loss industry wouldn’t be a multimillion dollar one.

And there wouldn’t be a number of over 50% of Americans who are obese.

It IS about how hard it is, or whatever it is that prevents people from being able to put this “simple” solution into effect. If it WASN’T about that, there wouldn’t be a problem.

When we post to you saying “no Tarantula, it’s NOT that simple” that doesn’t mean we’re offended. It means you’re full of it.

You’re getting yourself a bit confused.

Actually I do. I am a fitness instructor at a university. But, here are some cites regarding the unhealthier aspects of Atkins.

http://www.buildingbetterhealth.com/topic/highproteindiet/

I thought about posting them with my original post on this, but was loathe to start a “cite war” with Atkins fans posting all the hype Atkins sponsored advertiseing cites saying how great it is.

I have about 100 different students a semester in my various classes, as many as 20 of them a semester are Atkins dropouts, those who did well for a 6 month to a year period, but then dropped out and worse, gained back the weight PLUS some.

Generally the reason these “diets” work is that the person IS restricting calories. They feel fuller, (this IS true of fat laden foods, but can be obtained in much healthier ways), and the food on Atkins IS yummy, of COURSE a steak is going to seem like a great consolation prize when one “can’t” have bread (and Yes, I KNOW that the “new” Atkins is trying to change somewhat).

But what happens if the person is “only dieting” and in a lot of cases, this is true, is that they drop their caloric intake to a point where their body begans to use the muscle for the missing calories (yeah, it’d be nice if our bodies went to the fat first huh? but it doesn’t).

Here’s one cite explaining how this works.

www.hussman/eas.com

The same thing is true of the “new” carb diet too. Ask any nutritionist (which yes, I study in order to pass on to my students), any time you have a diet which severely restricts or depends upon one food group, it’s a “fad” diet.

Sure, some people are successful with it, but for a greater percentage of dieters, their bodies reach a certain point, crave the “forbidden” food, and the next thing you know, you’ve got a binge, and a breakdown, and then regaining the weight.

Different people need different types of diets (meaning a properly balanced diet) and different exercise disciplines. That’s another problem with Atkins, their one-size-fits-all (sorry no pun intended) type mentality.

And again, please note, that I did say (albeit in a smart alecky way) that if it works for YOU (collective you) fine. I’m not trying to talk diehard Atkinsites out of their program.

Just warning newbie dieters to the drawbacks it has.

Ooops sorry I missed part of your post.

“Carbs are death for diabetics”? Hmmmmmmmm, I could have sworn that I’ve seen diabetics eating rice, beans, corn?

But I could be wrong.

(rice about 20 grams of carbs per 1 cup serving, corn about 12, beans, also 12).

Carbs doesn’t mean just bread, cakes, etc.

Oh, and yes, sorry Ultress I should have phrased my post differently and added, to the Drastically reduce one food group “in order to lose weight”.

To the contrary. You are an unrepentant bigot who doesn’t take responsibility for her views and hides instead behind a 2,000 year old book that has been so mauled through time by redaction, incorrect translation, and willful misstating that it is not the same book.

You are a cretin, a bore, and I wonder why the Gods wasted the carbon it took to make you, you self-important, imbecilic, pompous windbag.

I’m wondering what I said that sounded like “I care about your opinion, Mockingbird …”

Therapy. Look into it.

For the first time ever, I actually thought about a debate on the SDMB at night, at home. So here is my final word.

Overweight people are fat for a variety of reasons. Some have confidence issues, some have self-control issues, some don’t give a fuck, and some (maybe 1 : 500,000) have a glandular issue(s).

My vitriol is in an effort to show any fat person that may be reading this, that the “why” unfortunately doesn’t matter. If you’re so fat that you can’t wear a swimsuit without people wanting to puke, or you can’t find clothes to fit you easily, or chairs to sit in comfortably, or can’t excercise easily - the why doesn’t matter. This is all in the first person singular. It all about the “me”. Simply put, apart from the odd person that you may meet (and take it from me, they are few and far, far between) no-one actually gives a shit. They all leave your company and say “poor guy” or “fat loser” or “what a cool guy” or whatever. Thing is, it makes no difference what anyone says 'cause that’s just words, and you’re still fat.

My honest advice : Go home tonight, go to the bathroom, strip naked and look in the mirror. If you don’t like what you see (and remember, fuck everyone else, this is all about you) just restrict your diet - like fucking crazy. Eat only fruit, veg, & pulses if you have to - yeah not the most perfect diet in the world, but I won’t kill you half as quickly as the heart attack. Then EXCERCISE. Doesn’t matter how wheasy, sweaty, shitty you feel - push through it. REPEAT EVERY DAY. After 1 month you’ll see the difference.

That’s all. And I think this argument is now officially dead…

I’m always up for an e-mail. I may be slow to respond, but given the fact that I spend more time that I want to hanging out at the Medical Center…

If anybody ever offers you FREE dialysis (their screw up, it SHOULD be free) weigh the options. I’m thinkin’ death might not be so bad…

(Yes, I have a very warped sense of humor.)

Next on the SDMB: Tarantula tells people suffering from depression to “get over it, you bunch of whiners.”

That’s not funny. You ignorant FUCK.

One is a mental illness. One is being fat.

You fucking fool. Get some education and then return when you have something to add.

Idiot.

Mental illness is not a choice, but neither is a glandular problem. It’s a lot less simpler than you make it out to be.

And this was sparked by Snoopyfan’s negative reaction to the statement:

“Fuck your freedom of choice, sometimes people need to have their choices reduced for them.”

Mockingbird, do you actually agree with that sentiment?

Tarantula, you’re really not helping yourself here.
