For reasons I can’t describe, I’ve had recollections of a dumb movie stuck in my head for the past week. For the life of me, I can’t remember the title. And I couldn’t find anything relevant on IMDB (mostly because I don’t remember any of the actors in it). So, if someone here could set my mind at ease by naming this movie, I’d be eternally grateful…
The movie was made in the 50s or 60s, and I think it was produced by Buena Vista. What I remember about it is a young woman (a ditzy blonde) coming to a small country (maybe it was only a village?) in the middle of Europe --possibly as their ruler, I’m not certain. The country is in dire straits, until she discovers this wonderful concoction they make called “schneeze”. It’s apparently schnapps and cheese, or something like that, and she convinces the country to market schneeze to the world. It’s a great idea, except the supply of berries used to make the alcoholic content of schneeze is soon exhausted. I also remember one character who was assumed to be mute because he never spoke; he sang to himself while plowing his field, and actually did speak to the others near the end of the movie.
That’s all I remember of it. It’s been over 20 years since I saw it, so I’m sure some of the details I’ve provided aren’t correct. Does anyone here remember the movie?
I know this isn’t it, Steverino, but your description sounds eerily similar to the Dr. Seuss story The Lorax. In it, the Once-Ler comes to a pristine forest, to make Thneeds out of Truffular trees. They’re soon exhausted, as are all the other natural resources. (It’s not a subtle message, LOL).
Anyway, I wanted you to know we’re thinkin’ out here!
I don’t know the movie…but Buena Vista is Disney’s outlet for adult oreinted movies. Unless there was an earlier Buena Vista that’s not who released it.
I’ve been surfing the net looking for “schneeze” and all I could come up with was a football player from Sweden or Germany sneezing, I don’t know. Maybe you confused the story line? Maybe it was a really bad bad bad movie no one should have ever seen?
The reason I thought it might be a BV production is that the movie had the look of a Disney live-action movie from the 50s and early 60s (on the lines of “Charlie, the Lonesome Cougar”)…or, if you remember, the ancient version of “The Pied Piper” that starred Van Johnson.
Lothos, I don’t think it was a really, really bad movie…just an incredibly silly movie from what I remember of it.
I want to thank all of you for your help. I’ve also searched the 'net and couldn’t find anything. And I’ve asked my mother (who watched the movie with me and who is usually quite good at remembering trivial little things like this), and while she remembers the details I’ve provided, she can’t come up with a character, actor, or title.
I took the liberty of posting your question on the IMDB message board. The response I got was for a movie called “The Penny Princess.” Does this sound familiar? http://us.imdb.com/Title?0045020
Mjollnir, it could well be. The plot outline seems vaguely familiar, but the only way to be certain is to view the movie. I’ll try to obtain a copy. Thank you!
