Someone put this into perspective for me

This happened months ago, but it’s been bothering me for a while now, and I’ve decided to turn to you, the members of the SDMB, for some clarification on it.

Around 3 months back when I was taking this typing class (well, typing and using Microsoft Word’s various features), me and some other students had a deadline to finish some assignments before we had to take our finals. This was a small problem because there were many things we didn’t know how to do such as making our graphs just right, changing the color of stuff, and our text book that we were supposed to work from just flat out didn’t have clear definitions for many terms. So me and this girl got to talking about how we had no idea what we were doing and how clueless we were and so she decided to that it would be a good idea for me to have her phone numbers and email address in case she needed help…didn’t make a lot of sense to me since we just got done talking about how clueless we were but I took it anyways. That sorta made me a little disorienated by itself. The teacher suggested we take the number of some guy sitting two rows behind us because apparently he knows everything. We both just shake our head and mumbled disagreements.

Now I couldn’t tell if she was flirting with me or actually needed help and wasn’t listening to me when I said I didn’t know what I was doing. So I decided to call her after I got done catching up with her homework so that I could actually help her in case she really needed help. This was about 3-4 days days later if I remember correctly. Well her mom picked up the first time I called and said she would leave a message, and she never called back. So I saw her in class later and she said she didn’t really need any help and she got everything done by herself.
So what happened here exactly? Did she want help from someone who was admitedly incompetent in the given subject, or something else?

It probably sounds wierd that I would dwell on something like this, but it left me dumbfounded.

Sounds to me like she could have very well been flirting with you, but this is coming from a guy who literally completed missed a girl throwing herself at him.

I mean I caught her, but I didn’t quite realize there wasn’t anyway she could have tripped as she did.

Anyways, yes she might have been flirting with you, but it is also possible she was just hoping to have a backup in case she truly did need help.

So in the end, I’m not really much help. Sorry dude.

And I’m talking about the chick. I’d think she was playing you, because hey, two can play that game but that’s just silly. Maybe she went off ya.

Or maybe she’s a silly twit who can’t come up with a better way to get your attention. Let us know what her next ‘move’ is.

I’m sorry to say, I could have been that girl. Maybe she was (like I used to be)just the type to take everything very literally, and not give much thought to how her actions could be interpreted by others.

She was clueless about the subject, but maybe she thought: “two know more then one”, and “at least, *if * we need to help each other, here is a guy I somewhat know and wouldn’t mind talking to”.
She could also, like you said, not have believed you were as clueless as she was. You were, after all a guy, and guys are better at everything, 'specially computers. At least, believing that is the path of least resistance for a girl dealing with helpful boyfriends, brothers, fathers and neighbours.

Then, when the assignment was done, she didn’t need any help anymore, so she saw no need for further contact.

I’m afraid she is as simple as that, and that no flirting was intended.

Slip the teacher $20 to assign another tough project, then ask the girl if she’d like to work on it with you.

Oh this was months ago. I’m on summerbreak now, and unless me and her end up in another class somehow next semester, I doubt I’ll be seeing her again. I just wanted to know what the hell happened because it had been bothering me.

Thanks for the responses  .
