I just need to say that I’ve found that there are some very rude, hateful people on this board. At least that’s how they come across to me. I’m a Christian and have no animosity toward these people. All I’ve done is dared to disagree with them. I’ve been called names and accused of lying and who knows what all. There are, however, some nice people who can talk without resorting to these tactics. It seems as this is their turf and heaven help anyone who dares to take an opposing view on anything. Oh yeah, and any source you name is automatically a fraud or the person is lying, whereas if it’s their source then, of course, it must be true. I think they need to learn that not everyone coming to this board is going to agree with their position on various issues, maybe for a variety of reasons. No matter what you tell them, they are right and your are wrong. I share what the Bible says about something, they don’t accept that. I share another source with them who knows what she’s talking about, they don’t accept that. Well, ya know, that’s their privilege. But I’ve got a right to be here too, and voice my opinion and I don’t have to agree with them. People should be able to disagree amicably even if they don’t accept the other person’s reason for disagreeing. Resorting to name calling and hatefulness is childish in my opinion. I don’t know if I picked the right forum for this as I really don’t want to flame anyone. If this is the wrong forum, my apoligies.

I think you’re in the right forum. I haven’t followed all of what you have been going through in GD so I can’t say for certain that I am right. My impression is however that the flack you are being fired with comes largely from the fact that you are debating with pathos and blatantly refusing to back up what you say. Even religion is treated with a certain erudite intellectualism around here.
I must say that I was rather interested at first to follow a reasonable debate about Chick Tracts, which I personally consider absolute hogwash and at times even offensive. Already your first reply in that thread made me cringe. Instead of furnishing the boards with some kind of reasonable input from a fan perspective you have just repeatedly asserted your right to believe in your God in your way. That’s fine I guess, but it won’t get you any respect around here.
Some explanation of the tracts and some reasonable arguments towards why they serve a purpose in a Christian belief system might have gotten you further. That being said I think you’ll have to expect to get your chain yanked on the SDMB when your world pivots around literature that is the quintessential opposite of reason, no matter what you say.
Your whining about that you have been asked for cites in GD in the newbie thread in IMHO indicates to me that you have no understanding of what this place is about and maybe you would be well served in trying to work out the fundaments of the SDMB as well as the fundaments of debate before you continue to post in GD. So far the fundamental right you have to hold whatever beliefs you want however unreasonable they are in other’s opinion, and a love for strange religious literature seems to be the only fundaments you have.

I utterly disagree with you about religion and about homosexuality. However, you presented your (completely wrong) views politely and fairly. As you said, some posters were indeed very rude. You did not deserve that.
There’s an ugly style of argument that’s popular in some areas, particular on some college campuses. It replaces debate with noise and viciousness. The person on the other side is shouted down and called names like “bigot” and “racist.” No discussion is permitted. Occassionally, newspapers with opposing positions are stolen and destroyed. This sort of thing may be what you have run into here. Some Board members may have been trained in that style of making their point.
This board ought to follow the example of Voltaire: "I do not agree with a word you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

I agree with Voltaire completely, but not december. Why? Because the doctrine, legal and moral, of Free Speech cuts both ways: If I say something utterly moronic, I can’t whine ‘But it’s my right!’ when someone calls me an utter moron.
