Song Lyric Game

Inspired by a board game I used to play, here’s the rules:

The first poster posts a word (any part of speech, proper nouns included, is fair game). The next poster posts a line or two (at least 10 words, but not much more – watch those copyright violations!) of a song which includes the previous poster’s word, and provides song title (and artist, optional). The given word must be one of the words in the quoted section of the song. Minor variations on the word (as in singular to plural, present tense to past tense) are acceptable in a pinch but not preferred.

Shall we begin?

glue

Dead president’s corpse in the driver’s car
The engine runs on glue and tar
–“Not to Touch the Earth,” the Doors

Now do I give a new word, or does the next player use a word from this quote?

Whoops! Knew I’d left something out of those instructions. I was thinking you’d provide us with the next word.

Sorry!

OK: next word:

Thought

Well, I think I thought I saw you try.
But that was just a dream. That was just a dream, just a dream…

Losing My Religion, REM
Hmmm…

Shire
evil grin

No sweaters’-knitting by the fire
Two hobbits in their little shire

  • Sam Shaber, When the Roses Run Dry

sliver

Gerry Rafferty’s “Home and Dry”:

“This silver bird takes me ‘cross the sky
Just one more hour and I’ll be home and dry
‘Cross the ocean, way above the clouds I come stealin’.”

eagle

Ignore the dyslexia.

Nothing to see here. :frowning:

I want to fly like an eagle
To the sea
Fly like an eagle
Let my spirit carry me

Steve Miller Band

conviction

That small sliver of light
Doesn’t make up for all the dark shadows
Which encompass the entire room

– Vanessa Carlton, Drowning

Next word: protocol

While I’m tempted to go with Kizarvexius’s turn just so I can post lyrics to Karma Chameleon, it was based on a misreading of Aholibah’s word by Mr. Blue Sky, so I have to go with Sternvogel.

*In the hills of France and on German soil
From Saigon to Wounded Knee
Who come from long lines of soldiers
Whose duty was fulfilled
In the words of a warriors will
And protocol
*

Protocol, Gordon Lightfoot
Next word: basketweaver

The butcher with his cleaver says it
The mad basketweaver says it
The jaded boxing writer
And the glass-jawed fighter says
Babe, I’m on fire

Babe, I’m on Fire – Nick Cave
up next,

Overture

Overture,
Curtain, lights,
This is it,
We’ll hit the heights…
–“This Is It” (Bugs Bunny TV theme song)

mouse

I know a mouse
and he hasn’t got a house
I don’t know why
I call him Gerald…

  • “Bike,” Pink Floyd

Sofa

Ich bin hier,
Und du bist mein Sofa!
–“Sofa #2,” Frank Zappa

Babylon

*Walking under the lion’s gate
Bitter tears for a city’s fate
Raise your voice in an ancient song
Say goodbye to Babylon

Hanging gardens with falling leaves
Temples robbed by the Persian thieves
Once this empire was standing strong
Say goodbye to Babylon*

Say Goodbye to Babylon, Army of Lovers
candle

candle

You and your glance
Make this romance
Too hot to handle.
Stars in the night
Blazing their light
Can’t hold a candle
To your razzle-dazzle…

(“Old Devil Moon,” Burton Lane & E.Y. Harburg, “Finian’s Rainbow”)

Russian

I can see the Russian Army rolling through my head
On one side of me lies the enemy, the other half is dead…

Beneath the cobblestones and the water main
Beneath the traffic of friendships and street deals
