Songs with "Under the Sea" or "Ocean" theme

Plus, toward the end of the party, when you want people to clear out, you can put this on:

“Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass. This one will have them running out in droves, screaming in horror, their hands covering their ears. I personally kinda like it, but most people … don’t.

and for those really pesky guests whom you wouldn’t mind never seeing again

“Captain of Her Heart” by Double. The piano interlude is especially effective. They won’t be back.

And I dunno what kind of parties SOME of us go to, but “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” isn’t a party tune.

I’ll echo Great Big Sea.

Not yet mentioned: Rod Stewart’s “Rhythm of My Heart” which has always sounded like a sea shanty to me. It’s the one with the lyrics: The rhythm of my heart is beating like a drum. With the words “I love you” rolling off my tongue. No never will I roam for I know my place is home. Where the ocean meets the sky I’ll be sailing."

Don’t laugh, but there are a couple good songs on the Spongebob Squarepants Movie sountrack. One by The Flaming Lips, and one by Ween. I forget their names, but they are both great.

A jaunty sea shanty by the Decemberists “The Mariner’s Revenge Song”

“We are two mariners
our ships’ sole survivors
trapped in the belly of a whale
its ribs are ceiling beams
its guts are carpeting
I guess we have some time to kill”

“Leah” - Roy Orbison:

Uh huh! I gotta go diving in the bay
Gotta get a lot of oysters
Find some pearls today
To make a pretty necklace for leah
Leah

“Fins” - Jimmy Buffet:

Can’t you feel ‘em circlin’, honey
Can’t you feel ‘em schoolin’ around
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you’re the only bait in town

“CAn’t Get It Out of My Head” - ELO:

Midnight on the water.
I saw the ocean’s daughter.
Walking on a wave’s chicane
staring as she called my name.

Ah, you guys rock! Lots of GREAT suggestions here, thank you! For some reason I didn’t get email notification on this thread and thought no one had replied to it - good thing I came in to check!

Evil Captor: i love “Brandy” :o

To all those suggesting songs for a “Makeout Room”: BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!! We’re not exactly geezers, but I doubt that there will be sufficent making out to warrant a designated room

I can’t wait to give some of these a listen!

robardin, you’re going to have to spoil this one for me

Ranchoth, your seafarin’ goths are killin’ me! They’re TOTALLY invited!

Oh, and to hijack my own thread: anyone who wants to toss in an ocean-themed cocktail suggestion to go with their tune, go right ahead  .

I’ll supply the spoiler since I just missed supplying the reference. It’s from Back to the Future. At the “Enchantment Under the Sea” prom towards the end of the movie there are memorable renditions of these two songs.

:smack: I saw that movie and everything!
Thanks for the contribution, Rodgers01

I’d also suggest:

“Sailing,” by Christopher Cross, and

“Cool Change,” by Little River Band, and

"Orinoco Flow(Sail Away)," by Enya. About a fourth of the way down from the Amazon page, there are options to play a short clip of this. BEAUTIFUL song!

Also, don’t know where to find this, but if you can find the Hawaiian song, “When the humuhumunukunukuapua’a goes swimming by,” I thin it would be favorably received, also.

Other thoughts, but possibly not meeting the theme of your OP:

“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”
“Down On the Bayou” and "Proud Mary,"Creedence Clearwater Revival
“Shrimp Boats Are Coming,” by ??
“Blue Bayou,” by Linda Rondstadt

Don’t forget the theme song!

♫*Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?*♫

What the hell…

Holy Diver—Dio

“A Pirate Looks at 40” by Jimmy Buffet. In fact, I’d just play his entire Live album.
“Kokomo” by the Beach Boys.

OOOhh! You’ve just sent me on an all expenses paid nostalgia trip!

I guess you don’t want to have a “Barnacle Bill the Sailor” theme, do you?

Oh yeah! Diver Dan, by the Silver Surfers.

Here’s a cocktail for you:

Ocean View
1 oz vodka
1/3 oz dry vermouth
1/3 oz melon liqueur
1/3 oz blue curaçao

Stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Decorate with a lemon twist.

Down by the Seaside by Led Zeppelin
Walk on the Ocean by Toad the Wet Sprocket
Down by the Water by PJ Harvey (although you might find that a little grim for a party.
