So I was listening to the CD What’s the Story Morning Glory by Oasis this morning, and it occurred to me that they should have put the song “Don’t Look Back in Anger” on it three times in a row to save me the trouble of replaying it three times before moving on to the next song.
There are a few other songs like that…when I get to them in the album, we have to hear them a few times before continuing on. Ones I can think of off the top of my head are “Comfort Eagle” by Cake, off the album of the same name. Also, “Down in Splendour” from Straightjacket Fits’ album Melt.
How about you? What songs do you have to listen to at least twice in a row before moving on?
“Roads” by Portishead, from the CD Dummy
“Is It a Crime” by Sade, but only on her greatest hits compilation
“(Time) The Revelator” by Gillian Welch on the CD of the same name
“Revelation: Mother Earth” from Blizzard of Oz and “Diary of a Madman” from the album of the same name by Ozzy Osbourne. Both songs IMHO showcase Randy Rhoad’s excellent songwriting abilities, blending elements of classical music with hard rock and making it work.
“Layla” by Derek and the Dominos. Duane Allman’s presence in the studio pushed Eric Clapton to new heights, and their “dueling” guitar leads makes for one of the most beautiful pieces of music (again, IMHO).
Dream On- by Aerosmith featuring Michael Kamen from the MTV 10th anniversary show. The song is already amazing live, but back in with an orchestra and it’s absolutely incomparable. I wish Aerosmith would do an S&M type album.
“96 Tears” - ? & the Mysterions
“Don’t Fear the Reaper” - Blue Oyster Cult (played REALLY LOUD)
“Magic” - Pilot
“Sky High” - Jigsaw
“Across the Border” - ELO
I have a whole mix-CD here somewhere of things I used to put on infinite repeat . . . lessee here . . . (why is there a triangle in my CD bag?) . . . ah, here it is. Some highlights:
“Ana Ng,” They Might Be Giants
“House of Stone and Light,” Martin Page
“Voices Carry,” originally by 'Til Tuesday; this is a version by a local college a capella group
“Save It For Later,” English Beat, also covered by Harvey Danger; I’ve done this with both versions
“Moonlight Shadow,” Mike Oldfield
“Blue Russian,” Scruffy The Cat
“Be Near Me,” ABC
“Why” Annie Lennox
“Zombie” The Cranberries
“Sledgehammer” by…by that one guy I get them confused
“Take Me to the River” covered or original
“Un Bel di vedremo” written by Puccini
There are one or two of those songs on every album I currently own.
I have resorted to making mixed CDs populated with these musical gems. The effect of having them all in one place is that I know the next song is going to be just as good so I am anxious then to hear it instead of the current one again.
“Steal My Sunshine” - LEN
“Salisbury Hill” - Peter Gabriel
“The Salt in My Tears” - Martin Briley(?)
“When Smoky Sings” - ABC
“Love Plus One” - Haircut 100
“High and Dry” Radiohead
(I need a life outside of music, I don’t mind tellin ya’!)
The first time I heard Forbidden Broadway’s “Be Depressed” I had to play it 12 times for the line “mob auditions for the chance to play dinnerwear that seems to be possessed.” Sums up the whole show.
