Sopranos: 5/14 (Open Spoilers)

I still think of him as Evan from a memorable Miami Vice episode.

Yeah, that cracked us both up at my house. I think I do a pretty good Sil face now; you can practice any time he’s on.

My mother almost fell out of her chair when the lawyer said Johnny Sack was 52. Anybody else have that reaction? She found it totally unbelievable- and Vicent Curatola really is 52 years old. He’s four months older than my mother. He has a really sunken look that’s great for his character, but she was alarmed.

She never even told Tony she was raped, did she?

I had a question during last night’s episode and for the life of me I could not come up with the answer. So I’m asking you to answer it for me. Whatever happened to Bobby’s wife? I seem to remember it only being a couple of seasons ago, but I can’t place my finger on it. Thanks!

She died. Janice helped him through it.

Car accident. If memory serves Bobby himself was stuck in the traffic jam her accident caused.

And Melfi never told Tony about the rape. That’s a really great episode. When she makes the decision not to tell him, it is such a heavy, well played moment… Remember back when they used to give Melfi stuff to do?

D’oh; you’re right. I’ve never been able to rewatch that episode.

I was mighty shocked to learn that I am six years older than Johnny Sack.

I remember that. I remember kind of wanting her to tell him at the time, but in retrospect it was the right decision. Melfi’s character would have lost all her ethical and professional integrity if she’d told or if she’d become personally culpable in any of Tony’s violence, no matter how justified it may have felt.

I think you mean “Delusions of Grenada.”… or possibly “Dilaudid with Grenadine”

The Christopher and Kelly storyline feels so rushed to me, I hope they show more of their story in the next two episodes.

I’d like to talk about Janice if I may. Who, besides me, thinks she’s not really all that bad (you know, except for killing that boyfriend that used to play Nick Tortelli, Carla’s ex on Cheers - but then he was a real bastard)? She’s not all warm and fuzzy with Bobby’s older kids, but she isn’t outright mean and she’s very realistically motherly, like when she was complaining about the boy’s grades. Carmella would have done the exact same thing. I would have done the exact same thing. And she takes care of Bobby, making sure he doesn’t drink beer while taking Vicodin, for example. She does harp on the kids to do chores and not eat like pigs and go on the kiddy ride for the benefit of the baby and stuff and I kind of get the feeling that we’re supposed to think she’s mean. And she spoke kind of brusquely to the baby, telling her to take care of her things. I don’t think the baby knows what she’s talking about or anything but moms do say things like that all the time, knowing that it will eventually stick and the kid will start taking care of her things.

And, yes, I remember she tried to steal from her mother. But that mother was a horrible woman and deserved it. Tony is the mook for being so loyal to that old bitch.

And, yes, she was very thoughtless to go through Ginny’s house. Making Tony’s injury all about her was pretty fucked up, too. She’s not saint but she’s very real. I would call her the most complicated and realistic character on TV.

Janicce is psychotic. Shes her mother’s daughter. I love the character despite she’s been unnecessary since season 2… but come on she’s fucking awful.

Janice is not motherly to Bobby’s children. She doesn’t miss an opportunity to shoot them down, preferably in front of an audience. As bad as Tony is, he comes off smelling like roses in comparison.

Well, Janice is a little interesting.

For the history of the show, she’s been quite the bitch, of course. Even last week. . .she was wearing the neck brace, and flipping out over the ride at the festival. Classic Janice stuff.

But, make no mistake, this week they softened her up considerably, and made her sympathetic, like Caricci is saying. They juxtaposed Tony saying that she was a selfish bitch with her being a pretty good mother and wife. They had Tony saying the most rotten things to her in the Bing. Even in his conversations with Melfi, Tony’s stories about her weren’t consistent.

Whether that was just for some good one-episode drama, or whether that’s the way they’re going with her, who’s to say? But I see where Caricci is coming from.

I have never seen her be unfair to those kids and I do try not to miss an episode. Fair and nice are two different things sometimes. And come on, she called the girl “honey” in a nice tone of voice and certainly made a reasonable request of her (to set the table)! And,yes, she talked about the kids in front of an audience, but that audience was family. It may not be what the touchy feely moms are doing, but it’s normal. I really have to say that the way she’s portrayed with Bobby and the kids is a way of showing that she’s not just psychotic. It may be to show that she just adapts to whatever situation she’s in for whatever reason (like when she was house hunting with the Nick Tortelli guy and wore a white golf sweater and called herself Jan) or it may be to show that she’s got many different layers.

Of course, I do expect at any moment that she’s going to screw those kids over in some horrible way.

Assuming I’m not being whooshed, that was Richie Aprile played by David Proval, not to be confused with Dan Hedaya aka Nick Tortelli.

Nitpick- Nick Tortelli, Carla’s ex on Cheers, was played by Dan Hedaya, who has never appeared on The Sopranos. Janice’s former boyfriend, whom she killed, was played by David Proval.

Carry on.

Damn! I shoulda previewed!

IIRC, Nick Tortelli was played by Dan Hedaya - Janice’s former boyfriend, whom she killed with what I believe was a 1920’s Style Death Ray, was played by David Proval.
