Sore gums and jaw, what might I have?

For the last few days I have had two sore spots inside my mouth. One centers around where my cheek attaches to my upper left gum, from my left upper bicuspid back to past my wisdom tooth. It feels sore and swollen, kinda like when you get hit in the mouth, doesn’t hurt unless there is pressure but fairly light pressure will do it. The pain is not particularly sharp except at a point where my cheek connects to my gum near the wisdom tooth. Applying alcohol, mouthwash, and such does not cause any stinging, nor does toothpaste (though there is pain when the brush rubs on the sore areas). When I run my tongue along the area there seems to be a bit of sourness like an open sore at the point where the pain is sharp, and the jaw on the sore area also has a feeling of numbness to it (I know, sore and numb, kinda a contradiction).

I also have a sore spot on my lower jaw. I cannot reach it from the inside of my mouth, but there is a sore spot just forward from the bump on the corner of my jaw that I can feel when I rest my head on my hand and put my hand there. The pain is similar to the pain on my upper jaw, but much more localized, and has been there a day or so longer I think.

I have had this before at least once, and it always went away on it’s own in a few days. I don’t think it’s a fever blister, pain not as sharp (though I’m not sure if I’ve actually had a real fever blister, that’s just what I would call sour ulcerated areas that were really tender I got on the inside of my lip - I’ve never seen a doctor for anything like this.

So does anyone have an idea what this might be? I need some input. See, I can only afford to go see a dentist or a doctor if this is something that really needs to be taken care of right away, as I am flat broke - the only way I could afford it would be to borrow money from my parents, and they are running low too because of all the expenses involved in our move in a couple of weeks. I have no insurance for another 60 days or so.

Secondly, I need to know if this is contagious, because I will probably have someone wanting to make out with me (and possibly more) in the next few days. I need to know to what extent I can put my mouth in contact with her, i.e. can I kiss her lightly on the mouth, with tongue, on non-mucous membrane tissue (i.e. neck, breasts), is it safe to lick mucous membranes of hers, etc. I definitely don’t want to give her anything but I’d like to do whatever I can.

Watch the contact until you know what it is - mucous membrane is one of the premiere pathways for bad stuff transmission.

IANAD, and free advice is always worth what you pay for it, pal, but my initial thoughts are you may have a gum infection, which is going to require professional treatment, probably involving, at the least, antibiotics.

Once again, IANAD - get some professional advice and be responsible - if you have a suspected infection, do NOT expose another person until you at least know what it is.

Good luck!

Darn. Well, I hope I can recover without antibiotics, because I know I can’t afford to go to the doctor. I’m sure I’ll recover on my own, I’ve had something like this before.

Sucks about the kissing. How about licking her neck? She likes that.

swish some 5% hydrogen peroxide around for a few seconds. Then rinse with regular water(you dont want to swallow too much of the hydrogen peroxide, it wont hurt you but it will make you burp a whole heck of a lot.

Anyway any infection (this works really well for relieving a toothache also) tends to be bubbled out very well by the hydrogen peroxide. For toothaches relief follows usually within about 30 minutes.
