Sound Ads?

I’m using Mozilla Firefox. The SDMB is the only tab open. I have no other Windows apps open. I’m reading posts…

And suddenly I hear a PSA having to do with teaching kids to read. WTF? Did you guys do that?

That’s all. One PSA. Ten seconds. I’m logged in. Thanks to a gift from a nice member, I’m a member. Why would I hear a voice-under ad?

Reported. I don’t know anything about this, have requested more information. May take a few days, it’s the weekend and summer.

Can we get a summary of the status of these ad issue?

Months ago (when I was paying attention and still thought that something might be done about PITA ads) it seemed that the story was it took a mouse over or some user action.

Jump forward until more recently and it seems that somebody else now runs the site and they don’t even pretend to care so much.

I’m probably way off here … so educate me.

One status is that if you are a member you are not supposed to get any ads.

I’ve been getting the random ads with sound popping up (today it’s been for band-aids - I think. I click it off before it gets that far)- usually when I’ve hit “Go to first unread post” it starts playing about 5 seconds after that. I then have to scroll up to the top of the page too find the ad and turn it off.

Only happened to me three times, on or before the 12th. Haven’t had it happen yesterday or today. Maybe a fluke?

Thank you, mods and administrators, for looking into it. Maybe some obscure setting or pointer or variable was on when it should have been off.

If this is the worst thing that’s happened to me in all these years, I’m cool!

FYI: I’m using the latest version of Safari and I’ve been getting sound ads, too.

…and…they’re back! I was just reading the message boards without being logged in, and heard an ad. So, okay: I logged in.

And… I heard the ad. Something to do with a roller coaster: clanking, then screaming. But when I changed forums, it stopped. Weird.

Are you sure that’s ads coming through your speakers, instead of your prisoners in the basement?

I kid, I kid…

I do my SDMB’ing at work (downtime buring compiles, etc.) and have discovered that the company’s web proxies have become batshit agressive about video stuff, including full-sound full-motion advertising. Finally, their jackbooted repression is working in my favor.

I am seriously going to start using AdBlock if these damn sound ads don’t get taken care of.

Just a data point. I’m running Firefox and have disabled AdBlock on the SDMB to try to replicate Trinopus’s experience and, well, nothing. I do get ads that apparently want me to restore my hair and plan my adventure to Florida, but no audio.

Trinopus, have you tried running something like SpyBot?

I don’t know Spybot, but I’ll find it and give it a whirl. I do have AVG, professional (paid) version and it catches the most malicious stuff, but I don’t know how it is for mere intrusive stuff.
