I don’t know if this is where I should be posting this. When I enter SDMB, the Ads all make noise. Is there anything I can do to turn this off?
Yeah. Firefox + Adblock Edge. All ads go away.
Just curious, why do the ads make sound on here? I’m not complaining, just asking?
The general approach here is that they can only prevent audio ads that you’ve already listened to. When you run into an auto-playing audio ad, please listen to it in its entirety, consider buying the product, then take a screenshot and send it to an admin.
I’ve seen an explanation that actions by the user even as minimal as a mouse-over can trigger the ad and they CAN’T do anything about it.
I’m sure that (at least in the future) they COULD do something about that if they wanted to.
I only get the same five or six ads - ever. And they’re all for generic global charities apart from one for a generic “online learning experience” which is targeted at “anywhere with internet access”. And one that isn’t even an ad, it’s just a picture of a beach scene.
I suspect this is because my location is basically the UK, but not quite, meaning that UK targeted ads are not being seen by me.
It was just annoying watching the debates live, and being on straight dope. The ads would start to play every time I refreshed the page.
That chopping sound ad is the most fucking annoying thing I’ve ever heard.
I usually don’t get those ads because my work adblock prevents them.
I was reading from home, and was getting lots of autosound ads in the ad window just under the first post. Typically, I would post a message, the thread would reload with my new post on the screen, and the ad would play. Or I’d open a link to a specific post in a thread, and the ad would auto play. There was never any scrolling over the ad, it was auto playing even when pulling up the page near the bottom.
Trying to go capture those in screenprint was too hard, as I had to go scrolling to find the ad, and it would end about the time I get it on screen and find the printscreen buttons.
Yes, it’s annoying.
it appears to me that SDMB’s ad broker isn’t really trying to stop auto-play advertisements with audio, no matter what the board’s leadership or ownership tells them.
I hope this isn’t going to devolve into a game of whack-an-ad, with the broker going “Ok, we stopped running that ad you reported to us. And here’s a new one.”
The auto-play ads are what finally got me to get adblock.
My philosophy is, if I’m not paying directly for something, I’ll let them advertise at me.
Turns out the limit of this philosophy is when the ad is intrusive.
Adblock kills the sound for me. All the other ads too.
