Southern California Doper Bash, Can it be done?

Yknow we could always meet up at CityWalk and go to the Beverly Hills Billarads club or that Blues club up there. I mean its sorta in the middle as well (right next to Unversal Studios)

Yeah, CityWalk sounds good. Lots of choices, right? I think I have been there once, but never to a bar. I just went to the movie theatre.
But, that sounds like a good place, noone will have any trouble finding it, thats for sure.
What does everyone else think?

City Walk has lots of choices, but it would make it hard to find other people.

My personal opinion:
Choose a place where it would be easy to park, and where you could sit for an hour or so while waiting for people. Some place not too crowded. “Tourist” spots usually have large crowds. The advantage is that most people know where they are and what they’re like, so they can make an informed decision. It seems like most of the other “bashes” have been held in bars. Another option would be a coffee house.

The problem is finding a date in December where people can arrange to meet. Second problem is finding a location (I’ve already read a message mentioning that Long Beach is too far.) The most central location would be downtown LA, but that’s hard to get to and you usually have to pay for parking. For example there’s a nice brewery in the Bonaventure Hotel but you have to pay the hotel parking prices.

My personal experience has been that if “x” number of people RSVP for an event, you can expect approximately 2/3 of that number to actually show up.

How about a great L.A. landmark like The Derby?

I want in! How about San Diego? It’s centrally located between L.A. … and, um Tijuana … and an empty desert. OK, forget centrality. It’s nice down here though!

Now the Derby is a damn good idea.

Great atmosphere. Great music…good food.

Don’t they have banquet rooms too?

I figure we do it after December though so that we can get enough ppl to RSVP and maybe we can have a swank time.

What about Killer Shrimp? My GOD they make the most delicious shrimp you ever et! Plus you get to eat with your fingers and drink lots of beer! (Their Sweet Potato Pie is pretty tasty, too). There’s one on Ventura Blvd. in the Valley, and another on (I think) Washington Blvd. in Marina del Rey. Both have outdoor patios (for the smokers).

I live five minutes from the CitiWalk!!!

I just wanted to bring this back to the top.
See if anyone had new ideas.

I’m thinking we need to come back to this after the New Year. Like many, I’m sure, my weekends are filling up fast between now and then.

I like the Derby idea, if we can get in.

And on a random note, I’ve put my first picture from my new digital camera on my webpage. Whoo hoo!

I used to think the world was against me. Now I know better. Some of the smaller countries are neutral.

Laura’s Stuff and Things

Just make it on New Years Eve, everyone can remember that & everyone is probably free at that time anyway…

I personally think that the beginning of January would be better than the period before Xmas (but them I’m biased, I’ll be gone for three weeks around the holidays.)

The main thing would be for someone to take charge, pick two or three places and two or three dates, and get a consensus.

Something like:

Reponses:
Y = I would go
N = I would not go
M = (maybe) not my first choice, but I would go

Places:
Place 1
Place 2
Place 3

Dates:
Date 1
Date 2
Date 3

Beginning of January works for me, and as long as it’s within a 50 mile radius of Downtown LA, I’m there.

Arnold’s right. We need a leader/planner to make some executive decisions based on the responses here. That person ain’t me, that’s for sure! Arnold? Pat?

January would be best (not New Year’s Eve; I’ll have to be at work New Year’s Day. Foo and similar comments).

CityWalk would be ideal from my perspective, but anywhere within an hour’s drive would work.

Shared pain is lessened; shared joy is increased.

Oh just buy a $50 video camera & have a big video conference on the net. Quite easy these days. & you can drink & surf.

mmmmm…drinking and surfing!

How are the waves up there, lately, handy. I’m driving through on my way to Washington, next week.

Ursa Major, pardon my french, butt the waves are shitty. Literally. Another sewage spill closes the beaches for a week. Some guys actually thought it would be cool to surf in it & they did. But not after that initial day. lol. e.coli everywhere in the water.

The holidays are rapidly coming to an end. Those of us who traded presents have wrapping paper filling up landfills. Soon enough, Y2k will have passed and either the world will have ended, or it won’t have. In either case, I suggest a Southern California Straight Dope Shindig (The ScuzzyDash (SCSDS)) In case of apocolypse, I think all good Straight Dopers will meet in Straight Doper heaven. That means the ScuzzyDash will have to take place in a more tropical climate.

The idea proposed by, Arnold Winkelried was to list four or five places and everyone would send back a message with a vote. Y for Yes, M for maybe, and N for Not in this lifetime. I think thats a great idea, I just don’t know of the great places, so I will just go with what was mentioned in the thread. After a place is decided, I figure we can work on a date.

  1. Universal City Walk
  2. Heath’s Suggestion in Long Beach
  3. The Derby
  4. Planet Hollywood/Hard Rock/House of Blues
  5. Great Write in that will blow us all away.

I added the write in, just in case someone comes up with something too good for words.
I thought I would put this in email form, just to put us all together on one mailing list. I will post this message to the board, for those Southern Californians who don’t have an email address listed, or who just didn’t want to post to the thread.

Email me at pricciar@mindless.com if you want to be added to the list.

I would like to think that we can have a date and place settled on by early Feburary, or Janurary.
