Speak to me of Final Fantasy VII remake

Has anyone played it? Is it worth it?

Back when it came out I played the original FFVII. I couldn’t finish it. I remember getting to a point where I was fighting Sephiroth and he was throwing planets at me and I wasn’t strong enough to defeat him. I was also stuck and couldn’t go back and build up more. I got frustrated and quit.

I’m tempted to try again with the remake. Is it worth it?

I have two friends who are huge FF fans, and who’ve just played it. They both loved the original, though one of them noted to me that the original’s story probably doesn’t hold up well today, and that the original was very long (like, 50+ hours of gameplay).

Anyway, they both also love the remake, even more. They feel that it does the original justice, and then some. One of them also noted that Square Enix realized that, due to the length of the original, the reboot probably couldn’t be that long as a single release, so apparently this new version is meant to be a “Part 1.”

Yes I heard it was only the first half.

It’s important to note that it’s not a remake or even a New Game+. There are fundamental plot changes that are a little spoilery to mention. As you’ve played most of the first one, at least you have the background info.

It’s not even a 1/3.

I haven’t played it since it came out so its not like I remember much of the story.

This is just pure bullshit. (I mean this at Square Enix…not kenobi 65)

I have played loads of games that are well over 50 hours long and absolutely loved them. Indeed, some of my favorite games are well over 50 hours (Witcher 3, Skyrim, Divinity Original Sin 2, BoTW, Red Dead Redemption 2, Disco Elysium, XCOM2, Grand Theft Auto V…I am sure there are more I haven’t thought of).

I loved FFVII when it came out…length made me like it even more.

There is absolutely no reason to think they need to chop FFVII in half except to get more money from you.

My uninformed assumption was that they didn’t have 100% of the game done nor would they in a reasonable amount of time, so they released this first part. I’m sure the extra money was not unattractive. Given the choice between paying once for the full game at some future date or twice (or three times) to get access to at least part of it sooner, I wonder what most customers would choose. Again, I have no facts to base my assumption on.

I played the game way back in the day. I don’t own a PS4 so I’ve been watching LP videos on YouTube and I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen so far.

Nah.

It’s just money.

Clearly many, many 50+ hour games are made in a “reasonable” amount of time that is also profitable.

And this is a remake so a much shortened dev cycle.

In the end they can now sell you one game in two installments and double their money.

My understanding is that the “part 1” is a full 40-50 hour game in itself. I’ve been playing it and have been very impressed so far.

I played the original game when it first came out and never revisited it, so I don’t remember many of the details. But nothing feels bloated or unnecessary - nothing feels like they’re just padding to add hours.

The graphics are gorgeous. The combat is fluid. The voice acting is pretty solid (and one of the bad guys is John DiMaggio, so bonus points right there). A lot of the design sensibilities feel a lot like FF XV, so if you p0layed and enjoyed that one I think you’ll like this one too.
