Speaking non existant language

Yesterday afternoon my girlfriend freaked me out. She woke u from a nap talking a language that I have never heard of. Sounded very roughly like eastern European but I am sure that has no connection. Her grandmother was polish and didn’t speak English but she never picked up Polish at all. At first I thought she was mumbling but the closer I listened they were all well formed words, a few words of English were thrown in and it seemed she was talking about a program on TV that was playing during her nap. This went on for a good 5 minutes before she went back to sleep.

Is there some known medical condition that causes this, she takes medication for bi polar, anxiety and depression. I think she took a little too much yesterday as she also messed up the potato salad pretty bad.

Start by googling for “aphasia.”

That was interesting and it did sound like a strong possibility. She would fit the high risk group in several of the categories. She woke up normal but I will keep a close eye on her. Thinking back this may not have been the first time it happened. It just carried on longer and was more evident.

Was she really awake. Many people dream in incomprehensible languages, well noted when trying to wake up from a dream and write down the incredible idea that came to you in your dream. People often sleep talk also, and the words can sound like gibberish.

She was not fully awake and may have been sleep talking

To say this is a WAG is an understatement.

You know those experiments they did on epilepsy patients who were getting a bit of their brain cauterized to tone down their seizures? They’d touch a part of the brain with a wire and give it a tiny jolt. Sometimes the person (being awake, of course) would report a sensation, memory, or some such. IIRC, one spoke some German despite not having spoken it since childhood and basically forgotten it.

Dreaming also culls up odds bits and pieces tucked away and forgotten. Maybe the girlfriend is getting a random memory of someone speaking Polish and kind of repeating it.

I’ve experienced this, except that it was English words that seemed like an incredible idea when written down, but was a stream of nonsense when read back later - English words and sort of English grammar, but just didn’t make any sense.
