The trailer (and this post) have spoilers for Endgame.
A few thoughts:
It looks like this movie is opening a new dimension (no pun intended) to the MCU. The way GotG opened up Space, this is opening up the idea of a Multiverse. I imagine this will be how the X-Men and Fantastic Four get introduced.
I hope this is the movie where Peter moves out of the shadow of Tony Stark and becomes his own hero. Spider Man was always my favorite Marvel hero and while I get they were playing up his youth, it always felt like he was second fiddle.
I guess the plot starts with Mysterio as an ally only to reveal his true DARK SCHEMES.
I still kind of wish Endgame was the grand finale of the MCU.
Looks better than the first trailer, but I’m still not convinced this movie will be anything but standard Marvel fare (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Bringing in the multiverse definitely opens up a lot of possibilites. I’d prefer them to introduce new versions of the X-men into the MCU, but it feels like they may use this as an excuse to make the X-men films retroactively canon. If they did something insane and Spider-versy where we met Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-men, though, I’d be 100% on board.
I agree that Peter needs to move out of the shadow of Tony Stark. I like this version of Peter Parker, and I’m not bothered by his Tony Stark hero worship or the tech spider-suit. I heard some people complain about how street level the plot of Homecoming was, but that’s what Spider-man is all about. The other heroes were fighting off intergalactic threats, he was fighting mad scientists and super powered bank robbers. So on that note I’m not sure how I feel about them pushing the SHIELD/Avengers plot line, but I guess that’s what’s happening in the modern comics so fair enough. My only real problem is when they depict him being whimpy (mainly in Infinity War and Endgame). I don’t mind showing him as an amateur superhero, but scenes like the one in Infinity War where he runs away from Mantis while bumbling “don’t lay eggs in me” are really annoying. Spider-man is cocky. He gets scared but he doesn’t show it. But, then again, when they tried to do that with Andrew Garfield he just came across as a dick. It worked in Civil War, though.
I recently re-read some of the early Spider-man comics and had completely forgotten how in his first appearance Mysterio pretended to be a hero. Granted, he pretended to be a hero by going after Spider-man with the backing of the Daily Bugle. So it makes more sense now why they’re going down this path.
All in all, I’ll be seeing the movie as soon as it comes out because I’m a big Spider-man fan, but I don’t think it’s going to be anything amazing or spectacular. Hopefully I’ll be wrong about that.
Forgive me, I know nothing about the comics but I like hearing people talk about them in speculation threads. Even though the movies have changed things from the comics, it’s still fun for me to get some background and history and perspective from the point of view of comics readers. So, thanks.
I have seen the MCU films multiple time, and I saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 5 times in the theater. What’s with the black suit near the end of the trailer. Didn’t Miles Morales wear a black suit at the end of Spider-Verse? Why would Peter Parker suddenly switch to a black suit? Could that be Miles?
No, it’s not Miles. He’s using the black suit for some reason, probably Fury’s idea but we’ll find out in the movie. It’s called the Stealth suit in descriptions.
I think the black suit is to provide cover for Peter’s secret identity - it’d be pretty suspicious if Spiderman (in his very recognizable suit) showed up in Europe at the same time that Peter Parker was on a European vacation. This way, he’s just another hero with a similar powerset.
If they’re following his original appearances in the comics (not sure how much he’s changed over the years), he’s just a special effects expert and doesn’t have any actual super powers. I’m expecting the monsters from the trailer are all created by him so he can look like a hero when he defeats them.
To be honest, that seems extremely unlikely if you look at the Level of destruction that is wrought by the Elementals in this trailer. I would have liked street Level FX Mysterio, but if this is all Illusion, Loki Needs some lessons. By the way, maybe we should in the future Spoiler stuff like this. While the MCU does depart from the Comics a lot, stuff like “Mysterio is a bad guy” takes away a lot of the Twist in the movie.
Every single review of the trailer I have seen has been analysed by comics geeks and they all have said Mysterio is a liar, a special effects guy, and not to be trusted. This either ruins a twist, or, more likely, Marvel knew that what would be talked about, and have decided not to go in that direction with him. Opening up the multiverse means not just new characters coming in, but doubles can be in play, like Nebula in EndGame. And there are more possible ways it could go than just that. I doubt Mysterio will be quite as the comic books portray him.
Eh, what? Not only does that not make any economic sense (it makes sense to keep making MCU films until the average box office return vs budget, averaged over several years of films, is a slim profit or a loss), but clearly they can make some additional fantastic films. Marvel has somehow figured out how to consistently make good movies.
From a story standpoint it was a nice ending. The way media works now it will always wear out it’s welcome because they will make movies or shows or books until those things fail. The MCU hasn’t yet but it will eventually.
