Sports Quotes

This one is for my husband - it’s been driving us crazy all weekend.

Some time back (no, I don’t know how far), there was an after game (not sure of the sport, either) press conference wherein a coach got into it with a reporter - the exchange was along the lines of the reporter saying “without me you don’t have a job” and the coach firing back with “what are you talking about? Without ME YOU DON’T have a job!!” Can anyone tell me who said it, what sport it was, and some general background?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, the best I can do is say that I’m reasonably sure the player in question is baseball player (pitcher?) Ed Lynch, and I think it happened in the 80s. I’ve heard the audiotape several times on Steve Dahl’s radio show in Chicago, but I never payed much attention.

It may not be much help, but it’s a place to start.
