Star Trek Strange New Worlds trailer and now begins Streaming 2022/05/09

Just rewatched BoT.

It took 3 minutes there because he slammed the ship in full reverse warp speed. Couldn’t outrun it but it began to dissipate before it hit.

In this one, Enterprise was out of phaser range (I’m assuming accuracy, not distance) - quite a bit farther away than the Farragut was. The BoP came up behind the Farragut.

Still liking the Screaming Chicken space paint on the BoP

So did I. I especially liked the brief but meaningful moments:

… like Pike letting Spock realize that he is the one that Pike cares about and has to save, at his own expense. And then they express how important each one is to the other. It’s no wonder that in “The Menagerie,” Spock is the one planning to get Pike back to Talos IV so Pike won’t have to live in that damn beeping cart for the rest of his miserable life. He never asked if it was okay; he did it because he cares about Pike.

Another moment: Chapel barely holding back tears as she tells Pike what a mess Spock is when he’s on the biobed.

Pike in a rare moment of anger, telling Ortegas, "STAND DOWN!"

Scotty!

Pike making mama pasta. Captain Foodie, indeed.

Is it just me, or is the more HoYay between Pike and Spock that there was between Kirk and Spock in TOS?

If that means what I think it means Kirk/Spock slash fiction was definitely a thing in the 70s and 80s. I think it may even be where the term slash fiction comes from.

As is common with cultural phenomena and etymologies, it’s difficult to be 100% certain, but generally this is believed to be the case. Specifically, it is believed to have come from Kirk/Spock romantic fan fiction in the late '70s from female Star Trek fans. There were also Kirk&Spock fan fiction stories, separate from Kirk/Spock, where the ampersand represented friendship as opposed to a romantic and/or sexual relationship.

And that’s basically what we got, right? A creative thinker who isn’t afraid to speak his mind, but definitely not a rogue. Maybe the actor wasn’t as charismatic as Shatner, but there’s no doubt that the show’s writers got TOS-era Kirk.

While listening to Trekyards, I thought of a scenario which would fix any inconsistancies in Quality of Mercy…the events of TOS Balance of Terror are the result of a predestination temporal paradox. UNTIL Pike learns of the events of the Romulan Neutral Zone Incursion and attack, events would have played out as we saw in SNW. Now that he knows, any number of things could play out.

He actively tries to prevent or change the events of Quality of Mercy, or maybe something smaller. Somehow Section 31 learns of his ‘temporal event’ and sends in a spy. Butterfly effect ensues…etc…etc…

Doesn’t really matter I guess…as I’ve said elsewhere, we’re in a different time branch anyway and have been ever since Future Guy caused a Klingon to crash at Broken Bow. Diverged again when Future Guy saved Enterprise in a later episode…and screwed up AGAIN probably when the Mirror Universe got THEIR timeline messed up by pulling a ship from the future…all of which leads Evil Lorca to come over and screw things up.

Gotta say…Given that at least in some states or countries, you can end your own life or have someone help you do it, pull the plug, why wouldn’t this be an option in the future world of Star Trek? Man, if I were in some horrible situation like Pike’s, post-accident, where I lived in a box in pain and couldn’t do a thing but beep, I would not want to continue like that.

“Chris, do you want to die?”
“Beep”
“Chris, do you want to live?”
“Beep beep.”

Yes, I know that Spock will get him to Talos IV eventually, but if that were not the case, couldn’t somebody at least offer Pike a chance to make an exit?

Maybe it’s against Starfleet regulations. Waiving the right to self-harm could be part of joining the service. In essence, you are taking up arms against a Starfleet officer.

Though that presumes that Pike is still in Starfleet post-accident, and not discharged for medical purposes.

Another possibility is that given how Pike is repeatedly granted insights into his own future, maybe he knows that ending his life could lead to disaster in some way. We know that he’ll willingly sacrifice his own well-being for others, it’s in his nature.

He is still in Starfleet

Mendez: "We didn’t have the heart to discharge him " (Something like that.)

Another idea for the very last ep would be to do a ‘10 years later’ after Pike goes to Talos…General Order whatever is waived as they’ve determined that the Talosians have died by then and Kirk and Spock go to take his body home.

Yes, it was the reason they could have the trial of Kirk because Pike still held command rank.

The end of Menagerie and for Vina, The Cage are products of their time where living in a fantasy world that isn’t real was a happy ending because everyone was handsome and beautiful. With Pike in Menagerie it’s more complicated because he is severely disabled but still it seems off that this was supposed to be a good outcome for all.

All right, I’ll watch it but I’m not a big fan.

It’s really the Abrams films that changed Kirk. He’s been a pretty consistently written character otherwise.

Yes, and as I’ve said before, that’s a different Kirk. Just as Mirror Universe Kirk behaves differently. Star Trek has a tradition of taking characters from different timelines and tweaking them.

Yes, it’s really just a justification for Abrams to do whatever he wanted with the characters and story without having to conform to any sort of series bible, but at least he made the effort to explain it all.

Well considering the alternatives were either Pike dying or spending the rest of his a disfigured quadriplegic who can only communicate by blinking light I’d say that was a good outcome for all. And being a product of it’s time explains why assisted suicide or euthanasia were never brought up as options.

VIna is also severely disfigured, for the record.

And the message of The Cage is “Humans would rather die then live as slaves in a fantasy world.”

You would rather die unless you are a disfigured woman and they can make you beautiful.
