Any guesses how they will bring the actor back?
Maybe the doctor put him in the transporter where is child used to be. Didn’t Hemmer accidently notice that the doctors station was using too much power and was told not to run a diagnostics on his “experiment”?
I guess the main possibilities are:
Bring the literal character back through a ‘Trek’ loophole. If I were a writer on the show and told to bring the character back, I’d do something like invent a huge threatening problem that they discover only Hemmer knew how to solve. So they undertake a desperate time travel trip back to where/when Hemmer jumped to his death, and they transport him out of his fall and save him.
Bring back the actor, but not the exact character. For example, it turns out that Hemmer comes from a caste of engineers in his society, and they are all raised with the highest value of ‘to fix what is broken’. And the people of the planet are nearly identical, so another character shows up and acts pretty much like Hemmer. Ease him back into the fold by making a bunch of jokes and comments about how much he is like Hemmer, then just drop the jokes at some point and ‘Hammer’ or ‘Hummer’ is now part of the crew. Probably not woth one of those names, though…
Bring back the actor as a completely different character with a different race. If it was the actor that made Hemmer great, he can do it again as someone else.
If this were later Trek, they could just bring Hemmer back as a Holodeck simulation, because his advice is so valuable. But God will not smile on Strange New Worlds if they introduce the Holodeck into the show, so this one is out.
The showrunner has said that they wished they hadn’t killed the guy off. His death was planned right from the start of the series, and the episodes were shot before they realized what a big fan favorite he was becoming. So my guess is that we’ll see the same actor as a very similar character. Perhaps less experienced, and therefore working under Carol Kane’s Chief Engineer, if that’s what she is.
“Aenar can go into a hibernation mode. We haven’t told anyonebin StarFleet Medical about this for reasons.”
We didn’t actually see Hemmer die on screen. Perhaps he survived the fall in a deep bank of snow, and the extreme cold kept the gorn babies dormant (and maybe even they eventually die). He’s able to keep himself alive because of his arctic physiology and ingenuity, using scavenged supplies from the downed starship, and eventually cobbles together a communications device. And, lucky for him (and us the audience), the Enterprise passes nearby at some point, just at the extreme range of his makeshift radio…
My guess would be as a new character with different makeup. Star Trek loves to do that. I hope they don’t pull shenanigans to brim Hemmer back; that would rob his sacrifice of meaning. And holy crap, Carol Kane on Star Trek?!
I would like Hemmer back. I just loved that character. He was my favorite on that show, the only one I liked even more than Captain Pike.
Exactly what I thought…THE Carol Kane? I guess shes a time traveller who desn’t age. Holy crap.
Does she have a toaster as a weapon?
I was able to zoom in enough on the photo to get a good look at the insignia. It’s just like in TOS: the “operations” division insignia. See below.
I’d love to see her knock out a Klingon with a toaster.
That would be awesome.
I missed the news that the actor playing Hemmer was coming back. If that’s true I would suspect it will be in the form of a flashback or recorded message (maybe for Uhura?). It would be cheap to bring the character back Spock style.
Any news on when the next season will be?
Per this TrekMovie article, production has wrapped but nothing more specific than 2023:
(no spoilers, just vague descriptions of what the show will be like)
Not soon enough, I know that.
My wife and I are watching this show now and have seen three episodes.
Yeah, so this is a Star Trek show. Like, a normal Star Trek show.
It’s OK, nothing super amazing yet.
After 5 seasons worth of Discovery and Picard dreck, it is in fact super amazing.
Yeah, I have heard that. I’ve never seen Discovery or Picard, but I have heard bad things.
Actually, I think it’s more like 6 seasons of Discovery and Picard dreck, so it’s even more super amazing than I thought.
