So I’m watching Cartoon Network yesterday, and I see a commercial for a badly drawn new cartoon. My first thought is, “Boy, those sure look like Star Destroyers.” Then I realized with horror that they were Star Destroyers.
Apparently, someone had the brilliant idea to make a cartoon that goes between episodes II and III. While I think it could be cool, the animation looks really, really bad.
Has anyone else heard anything about this cartoon?
It’s going to be what they call a Micro-series so the various episodes will be very, very, very short. Genndy Tartakovsky is the creator and you can definately see that in this. he’s also done Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Lab.
I tend to not dig this micro-series very much. They’re just too short to really entertain me. What I’ll really need is good dialog. I’m luke warm. No pun intended.
I’m actually looking forward to this one, but not because I’m a Star Wars fan.
I do like “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Powerpuff Girls,” and (especially) “Samurai Jack.” Turns out the Genndy Tartakovsky, who had a hand in creating all three of these cartoons, is a huge Star Wars fan, and is behind the “Clone Wars” cartoon.
Bottom line for me: “Samurai Jack” is the most ass-kicking cartoon to hit my screen in a long, long time. I can’t wait to see what this guy is going to do with the stale (and growing ever-staler) Star Wars story.
Interesting presentation, too… according to this, “Clone Wars” is going to be presented as 20 animated shorts, each 2 or 3 minutes long.
And just to be clear, it’s not “bad” animation… “Samurai Jack” has actually featured some of the most remarkable animation ever seen in a popular animated series. It’s minimalist, and it’s very different than your average episode of “Transformers” or “Yu-Gi-Oh!” but it’s a far cry from bad. I’m expecting something very interesting in “Clone Wars.”
The extent of my knowledge comes from seeing a snippet of commercial with Yoda in it. I was flipping through the channels and saw that when my brain promptly went into meltdown.
ONE: The entire Clone Wars cartoon will most likely be collected on DVD, so folks like Guinastasia and I who don’t have cable CAN watch it…someday.
TWO: The cartoon, AFAIK, only covers a small part of the actual Clone Wars. You can get a MUCH larger portion of it in the Star Wars: Republic comic book from Dark Horse comics, which is basically covering most of the major battles between Episodes II and III.
THREE: I haven’t seen the ads, but I suspect they’re Clone Transports, an ancestor of the much-larger Star Destroyer. Check out the Battle of Geonosis in Episode II–you can see those ships flying over the battlefield.
