Star Wars Galaxies ships June 26. Who's playing?

I’m still trying to decide whether or not I want to plunk down my $50 for Star Wars Galaxies when it comes out next week. One the one hand, I love Star Wars (the original holy trilogy, of course, not the cartoons of late) and love Star Wars gaming, for the most part. On the other hand, I was not able to get into Everquest, despite the fact that some gamers even lost their lives in such fierce devotion to this game. However, I think a big part of that is the setting. I’m not huge into Fantasy style gaming because I prefer to know “the rules” of the environment (gravity, physics, weaponry…) and I guess I’m to dumb to lose myself in the fantasy world.

I guess what I’m wondering is is there anone out there who maybe has beta tested it, or knows someone who has, or has some knowledge that will convince me to buy this game? I want to play it. I want to love it. But $50 down and $15 a month is a big commitment.

I won’t be buying it, at least not right away. Why not wait til some reviews come in and they get a few patches in place? I haven’t heard great things about it, personally.

So have I. I might consider playing, but I want to wait at least until the early bugs are ironed out, the servers are hardened, and some real meaty reviews have emerged. Plus, I want to be ure the game will keep my attention.

I lasted for 2 years on UO, 2 weeks on EQ, and semesters on DAoC. I liked all of them, but the flaws and limitations just brought it down after a while. So don’t be in a hurry to buy. I’d say I got my money’s worth out of UO and DAoC, but I haven’t stuck around like a lot of people.

I’ve heard nothing but bad things, and most people I’ve talked to think the game is nowhere near being done.

I’d wait a while. Nothing worse than paying to beta test a game for the first few months of its run.

I have a friend who was beta testing it. In his opinion, it is sooo not ready for release (I tried beta testing, but it wouldn’t even run on my machine for more than a couple minutes before crashing in some manner. I was never able to move beyond the tutorial).

If you want to get into it, I’d recommend waiting a couple months for various patches, etc., to be released. Jumping into it is likely to be waste of money.

Oh, and apparently the NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) for beta testers is still in effect. That doesn’t seem like a good sign to me that they still won’t let people talk about the game only days from its release.

Heard nothing but bad. Several people said that it is basically Sims Online, in the star wars universe. It will also cost 15 bucks a month (highest price MMORPG to date that I know of).

I could have been in beta, but I refused to PAY to be in beta (they charged to get your beta CD). I have Beta-ed PS, DAOC, AO, EVE, and EQOA and this was the first one to charge me to do so. I really think that if this didn’t have the SW name, no one would play.

I hope it sucks. If it doesn’t, then this game may destroy my social life . . .

Does anyone know if they’ve released hardware specs for the game yet?

I’d like to play, but I have a feeling I’d have to upgrade my machine…

I can’t do it. Pay constantly to play a game? No thanks. And I can’t imagine spending that much time sitting around on-line at home either.

That and my computer wouldn’t be able to handle it anyway.

Unfortunately, quality or not, all the Star Wars fanbois will dump their money on it. Which is part of the reason I’d want to wait a few months: crazed fanbois enter, crazed fanbois find out they don’t get to be Luke Skywalker, disgruntlement and the usual “OMG!!! I’M CANCELLING!!!” ensues. Wait a few months for it to settle down.

No idea how old or accurate they are, but here are the specs from Amazon:

Windows 98 SE, Millennium, 2000, and XP

Intel PIII 933 MHz or AMD Athlon 900 MHz processor (Intel P4 1.5 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1500+ recommended)

256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended)

32 MB 3D Graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting (T & L) Capability (64 MB 3D Graphics card with Vertex Shader and Pixel Shader (VS/PS) Capability recommended)

Supported chipsets at release: ATI Radeon 7200/7500, ATI Radeon 8500/9000, ATI Radeon 9500/9700, Matrox Parhelia, NVIDIA GeForce 256, NVIDIA GeForce 2 family, NVIDIA GeForce 3 family, NVIDIA GeForce 4 family, NVIDIA GeForceFX family

2 GB free hard disk space

Quad Speed CD-ROM drive; sound card; keyboard; mouse

Note: This online game requires an Internet connection and charges a monthly subscription fee payable by credit card

Those specs are accurate. I myself am beta testing on a PIII 600 with a
GeForce2 GTS and 704MB of memory.

While I personally haven’t experienced any crashes, plenty of people seem to
be. The game is quite buggy, but the developers are going non-stop to fix as
many as possible pre-launch. Those of you who are planning on playing should
expect your first 15-20 minutes to be spent watching the patcher do its
work.

Still, I’m having fun, and am not planning on canceling my preorder.

I’ll come back and say more once the NDA is lifted.

Well, any MMO is buggy at release. It’s tradition.

NDA has been lifted! Let’s hear it people!

Yea, please, I’m very curious.

I feel the same way, Max Carnage. I like the idea of playing in the Star Wars world, but I really couldn’t play Everquest. I cancelled after my first paying month (2 months total, including the free month). Not enough to do.

So for the beta people… Is there more stuff to do then the constant killing monsters to get more powerful?

Beta 3 tester checking in.
I like that it is skill based. I’m currently running a Scout/marksman/entertainer

The charater customization ROCKS. There are sliders for stats (nose width, eye size, height, etc). I haven’t heard anyone complain about THIS aspect of the game.

I’m a casual gamer, and have barely gotten out of the novice skills, so I can’t tell you much about the higher end stuff.

I’ve had fun, but I’m not sure if I’m buying it. Actually the game goes in cycles bug wise. It was sort of stable, then there was abig patch and that introduced lots of bugs. severs were going down quite a bit, but I’m not how much of that was on purpose. I have had pretty good client stability. My hesitation isn’t based on bugs, its am I going to be able to play enough to make it worth it? If it was winter I might, but I have harder time playing computer games when it is nice out. Should I buy it just so I can say I’ve been playing since day 1?

plenty of reviews floating on the net.

Having been to E3 last year, and talking with my friend who went this year, I’ve been thinking a lot about the MMO phenomenon.

I doubt anyone reading this thread doesn’t know what “MMO” stands for, but just in case: “Massively Multiplayer, Online.” I.e., lots and lots of people playing characters, inhabiting a virtual world, interacting with each other and the world in real-time via computer network(s).

My first observation was that I don’t tend to like MMORPGs.

My second observation was that it was not so much the MMO aspect that I didn’t like - it was the RPG aspect. I’m just not the kind of gamer who enjoys RPG type games, no matter how they’re dressed up. If it involves building stats, gaining experience, or doing quests, I’ll probably yawn at it. I prefer semi-twitchy games with large amounts of freedom and an exploration element. I love Grand Theft Auto 3 and can play it for hours and hours without doing a mission, for example.

My third observation, based on the first two, and after some length of thought, was that “MMO is not magic pixy dust.” If you have a crappy game, sprinkling MMO on it will not make it magically delicious. Almost all those people making MMORPGs are going to fail, because they’re assuming that it doesn’t matter if their game is a really good RPG. As long as it’s MMO, it’ll be successful. It’s a sad example of herd-mentality that is entirely too prevelant in every industry, but particularly in gaming. Everybody jump on the bandwagon…

On the other hand, MMO can be a nice element as part of an otherwise good game. For instance, there’s a project team trying to activate the hidden multi-player code in GTA3 - http://www.multitheftauto.com . This I am really looking forward to.

This is a rather long digression, and I apologize, but I’m trying to lead up to my point, which is this:

Galaxies is, I feel, a typical example of herd-think, of “MMO is magic pixie dust.” Hey, everyone’s doing MMORPGs - let’s do one based on Star Wars and rake the money in! This kind of motivation and the resulting development philosophy rarely turns out great games. Add in the early reports of a buggy product and I’m not filled with hope. Does anyone remember the Star Wars themed Street Fighter II clone “Masters of Teras Kasi”? Didn’t think so…
So, in sum, I will stick with Jedi Outcast, thank you very much. It’s the best Star Wars themed game I’ve ever played, and while the multi-player is far from perfect, I expect I will find it far more enduring than “let’s guild up, er, I mean, get a scout party together and then go hunt the black dragon, er, I mean go look for some banthas so we can level-up our characters and get gold for new armor, er, I mean, gain technology skill points and buy a new wookie bowcaster!”

Yes, there are plenty of reviews, but I don’t like most reviewers taste in games. Except mine, of course. Cause I’m right n’ stuff.

And Ben, you’re right in so many ways, but that’s the herd model that is part of the business. A few years ago, it was Diablo clones. A few years before that, RPGs were dead…

Interesting perspective from Gabe from Penny Arcade towards the bottom of today’s news post (it’ll prolly be in the archives tomorrow). I quote:
