Stargate Universe; 1.06, Water (open spoilers)

…and human bodies are what, 70, 80% water?

Cite? It doesn’t make sense that all gates are the same distance apart for a galaxy but not across the universe. The show is going to great pains to show that distance matters.

If the standard gate range is around 100,000 light years, that puts most of the Milky Way within range. But it’d be hard to get to Andromeda at 2.5 million light years away, or Pegasus at 2.7. But seeing as those are conveniently 25 galactic diameters away, you could use a series of around 25 evenly spaced standard gates or 1 supergate, or 1 ZPM powered standard gate. To go 1000 times further (1 billion light years), apparently SGU needed the power of a planetary core.

Now, suppose earlier generation gates seen in SGU had 100 or 1000 light years range. You’d only see a handful of gates within range. I think Dr Rush understands this, but apparently Col. Young does not. (Or he wouldn’t have tried to dial Earth)

p.s.
If you piss off a porpoise enough, it stops being friendly and gets bitey.

I don’t have one, it’s something Samantha Carter said in one of the SG1 episodes. I don’t remember which one of the 200+ episodes she said it in.

/Edit: I remember she said something to the effect of ‘even though the trip [through the stargate] seems instant, it actually takes 3.x seconds, always the same amount of time because stargates are the same distance from eachother in subspace.’ If I think hard enough about it I’ll probably think of the episode… gimme a bit./

/Edit2: Stargate SG-1, the Ripple Effect. Ripple Effect | SGCommand | Fandom She mentions that all stargates are the same distance apart, and that they must’ve travelled from much, much further because it took more than the 3.x seconds - I’ll pop it in the DVD player real quick and find the time… oh the torture of having to go back and watch SG1! :P/

The Carter-McKay intergalactic Gate Bridge, 'eh?

I think Young understands, he just didn’t realize how dire their power situation was, or that they had one at all.

Hu?

On the other hand, a friendly porpoise is likely to try some casual sex play with you. So you’ve got a choice of bitey, or giant prehensile penis.

Decisions, decisions.

“Now, while it may feel immediate, the Journey between gates is not instantaneous. It takes, on average, zero-point-three seconds travel time. According to the gate diagnostics, the travel time clocked in at 3.4 seconds, suggesting a significantly longer trip.” -Samantha Carger 5:30 odd seconds into 9x13 - The Ripple effect.
I was incorrect. Nevermind. I might have to do a Gate-athon to see if I can gain clarification.

I could swear that, in a few of the SG1 episodes, they showed that the gate system is a network- that you didn’t jump directly from gate to gate, you had to jump to the nearest gate, which would then instantaneously jump you to the next gate. The entire system is automated- all you have to do is dial your destination, and the gate network would essentially route you through all of the available gates to get you to your destination.

This would explain why it only takes a certain amount of energy to gate, no matter the distance (as long as you’re staying in a local network)- you only have to power your starting gate to access the network, and the other gates in your path provide the power to get you to your destination gate.

It would also explain why Destiny’s range is so limited- there aren’t any networks out where they are, now- so the gates they do have are limited to local calling only.

My wank about the gates around Destiny is that they do work normally. Millions and millions of years ago when the Ancients first colonized the Milky Way one of the first things they did was plant 9-chevron gates all over MW. Ours are among the oldest in existence, and they’re 9-chevies. The gates we’ve seen around Destiny are also 9-chevs. The Ancients must have worked out a use for 9 chevrons before sending out the gate-builders and Destiny.

Thing is, your point of origin (POO) is based on Earth. If you aren’t on Earth, you need someone like Math Boy to fudge some numbers so your gate tells Destiny you know where you are in relation to Earth. Could be a simple fail safe to keep unfriendly aliens from using the gates to spread outside their own galaxy. We know what happened when the Goa’uld started using MW gates. The Ancients never met the Goa’uld, but they may have foreseen something like them.

If you’re on Destiny and you try to fool Destiny’s gate into thinking you’re on Earth, you get an error because your POO and destination can’t be the same.

Destiny’s gate in particular could have even more locks built into it, limiting it to “in range” gates. Look what happened with the swirly alien bugs. 500,000 years ago the desert planet may have been much more habitable than now. But the bugs, seemingly friendly, nevertheless by nature use up water and/or sequester it someplace. They may not even be native to the desert planet. They ruined that planet, and Destiny’s current crew may have just inadvertently devastated another watery world, by releasing them on the ice planet. Who knows, the swirly bugs may have evolved specifically to follow water-based organisms like humans through gates, just to infect more planets.

I just caught up on all the episodes last night. I haven’t watched all of Stargate series so a few questions in case I might have missed some points.

They never did say who the attacking aliens were in episode one or who ratted them out. Is this still a mystery and is there a traitor in their midst?

Re Rush it’s pretty obvious (I think) that there’s some huge bundle of secrets he’s holding to himself re the ship and the gate mechanism etc, but I can’t imagine what they are re the operation of the ship as he seems to be as endangered as everyone else if the ship is screwed up.

Lot of overacting in this series compared to the original SG-1. I see they’re going down the the lazy Seven of Nine and Vulcan Catsuit titillate the fanboys road with the big nipply pontoons of Julia Benson jiggling around under a thin military tank top. Also you’d think they make the makeup a little subtle in this life and death scenario, but every female lead, esp the Tamara Johansen and Chloe Armstrong characters look like they have they own personal MAC counter girl along for the ride. It’s troweled on.

It was said on screen that the ships belonged to the Lucian Alliance.

Carter surmised they were Lucian, and further asked out loud: “how were they getting their intel on the Icarus project?”

We will be seeing more about this and I won’t be at all surprised when a Lucian, or Lucian sympathizer surfaces on Destiny.

I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Col Telford is in with them. He really, REALLY wanted to be in charge of the original Icarus away team, and is doing everything in his power to get control of Destiny.

From what I’ve read, Rush’s wife is dead and her death perhaps has something to do with his obsession with exploring the universe. OTOH, what if his wife isn’t dead, but rather being held by the Lucians to secure Rush’s cooperation? Just an idea.

“A thousand deaths are not enough for Yueh”

Out of curiosity are the two people who got fed up and stepped into the alternative star gate address on the limestone planet presumed dead at this point?

And what happened to that shuttle that left the ship at the end of that (I think) same episode?

Nobody has said onscreen anything more about those two people. Nobody has stated they are presumed dead by the people onboard Destiny. Nothing else has been revealed about the shuttle that flew away. These are still open, unresolved plot points.

THere is a link upthread somewhere that points out it was not one of Destiny’s shuttles.

I just re-watched the end of the “air” episode. There was no departing shuttle involved in that episode it was all gate travel.

Can’t we have both???

???

I’d have to check whether it was Air or what, but I rewatched the departing pod multiple times while pausing to get as good a look at it as possible. Definitely a pod detached from Destiny and drifted away before Destiny FTL bolted. It looked nothing like the shuttle we’ve seen, and didn’t really fit Destiny’s hull style, for whatever that’s worth.

If there isn’t a screen shot of it already out there, I could make one to prove it.

I got your back on this one. I saw something too.

I’d be most pleased if they were left unresolved. It doesn’t matter whether they were killed instantly after stepping through the gate or have managed to eke out a Tarzan-style life for themselves. When they had a chance to run from Destiny, they took it, and thus their particular fate is utterly irrelevant. All that matters is they took themselves out of the picture.

By the way, here’s the unknown spacecraft from the end of Air.
