Man, I realize everyone acting somewhat rationally would make for a boring show, but WTF is up with all the stupidity? Rush has learned how to control the ship but won’t share that info with anybody. Colonel dipshit won’t listen to Camille, ever, like some spoiled little brat. After the way he has behaved, there are maybe 3 or 4 soldiers on board who would stick with him if Telford was ordered to releive him of command, and Telford would be well within his rights to shoot him if he tried to resist being relieved.
Rush is arrogant, prideful, and otherwise convinced that only he knows how to properly run the ship. If someone else fiddles with it without his direct involvement, he’s sure they’ll break something. That’s not rational, but it is understandable. Even supergeniuses are human, no matter how sexy their accents are.
As for Young, he’s a military leader and it’s a general state of emergency. He’s naturally going to be inclined to keep order the best way he knows how, and in such a situation I don’t necessarily buy that civilian control is the best idea. Besides, she’s kind of an ice bitch and doesn’t seem to have a good reason for it, unlike Rush.
[slight hijack] If you ever get the chance to see Rhona in Doomsday, jump on it. This flick has it all: zombies, Alien-like marine fighting, medieval sword fighting, and a Road Warrior-like chase.
Yeah, I guess IC an see that a bit with Rush, except he does seem to feel guilt when his pride causes the death of a crewmember. That can only happen a limited number of times in his current predicament, though, so he better figure it out fast.
As far as Young is concerned, I don’t think he necessarily has to cede power to civillians, but they are in a situation that is not going to see them back to civilization anytime soon. They have been gone for quite some time now. He is a Lt Colonel (or is he full bird?), not a Major or Captain, so he should have some understanding of how to deal with people outside his chain of command, and how to play politics a bit. The sooner he realizes the necessity of this, the better off they all will be, though it will cut down on the writer’s ability to write drama into the show.
Oh sure. Rush isn’t completely heartless. He’s pretty ruthless and is of the opinion that A, many of the decisions they have to make will involve sacrifices, and B, he’s too important to sacrifice. The thing is he’s not entirely wrong, he’s just kind of a dick about it. He doesn’t want to lose people but believes it to be necessary pretty often. That’s his big character flaw, really.
