I find Starving Artist’s rhetorical gymnastics utterly fascinating. For someone who enjoys scolding others for perceived dishonesty, he is probably the most intellectually dishonest poster I have ever encountered on the SDMB. How can he possibly claim with a straight face that saying an attempted rape was not “all that serious” (among various other minimizing statements) is somehow qualitatively different from saying it was “no big deal”? Pull the other one, it’s got bells on.
Perhaps a more charitable, though more damning, interpretation is that he is simply incapable of formulating and supporting a reasoned argument. I have occasionally encountered students like this, the ones who simply seem unable to make connections, interpret evidence, draw conclusions. However, they are still young and their minds retain enough plasticity that I am generally optimistic that they can develop these abilities. In the case of Starving Artist, I fear that ship sailed a long time ago.
