State of the Nation: WE'RE SERIOUSLY FUCKED [long]

I assume all of you trembling at the prospect of one party controlling all three branches of government made similar statements in 1993.

Something must be done about this wretched and corrupt system whereby people who follow the rules of voting and cast ballots are allowed to choose their leaders.

I prefer Ace of Base.

Think about it.

That’s bad.
(P.S. I’m typing this from Sao Paulo, Brazil, where, by all accounts, the people tomorrow will elect a president who is endorsed by the COMMUNIST party. [sub]Lula isn’t a Commie (too close for my comfort, though), but the Communist Party is indeed endorsing him.[/sub]

So there is, indeed, hope for your world yet, Ass. I mean Ace.)

I retired from the thread out of consideration for your feelings, but I can always come back. I could also reverse the sentiment and say you were here for my entertainment, but the sad truth is that you are so out of touch, even with your political allies, that you resemble a inebriated man who’s crapped his pants and can’t figure out where the bad smell is coming from.

If you had posted a substantive rant about the dangers of allowing the Pubbies to grab all three branches of government, and thus allowing Bush and his droogs to indulge in lashings of the old ultraviolence to individual freedom and do the in-and-out with our civil liberties, you would have gotten solid agreement from many posters, including Your Humble Narrator. Unlike 1993, or even the Reagan era, we have an administration that is playing far too fast and loose with civil liberties while neglecting important domestic issues, like the economy.

But the paranoid, incoherent mess you dribbled forth in the OP just made you look like the hysterical ninny you are.

If you desire a substantive, measured, rant, you can go damn well read the article that Hamlet posted, and write your own in your blessedly inimtable style. The prospect is uproarious, since there emanates no fear from you at the prospect of a Republic sweep – you would be taking far more forward action then your current reactionary attacks, which I attribute to your political wear underneath your current dress.

As for your retreat under feigned concern of my feelings, I, as always, appreciate your good humour. I used to suggest you cease posting in my threads, Gobear, if I thought it could protect your flagging reputation, but I can no longer find the flag.

As for my own paranoid, ranting style, I appreciate in both senses the dangers you rightly point out; hysterical I may be; ninny I am not. I am, unfortunately, too often correct to dismiss my own dread.

You have underestimated my will and talent at great cost already, Gobear. How often will you continue to make the same mistakes? You have been reduced; you need to build. You fight the wrong fights; you are conflicted; you are small; you are short-sighted; you are vain; your posting errors reveal your chaotic, jumbled mind; you are impatient; you don’t consider; you are rabid; you are most of all, extremely foolish: You think the world is concerned with you, and it is not; But I am:

For I think somewhere deep inside of you is a good man.

Please stop proving me wrong.

-Ace

C’mon, Milo. You’re way more sensible, polite, and thoughtful than that post, IMO. Stay away from the rum in Sao Paulo from here on out, what?

Hmm, classic case of projection.

Ace, m’boy, calm down. Have nice cup chamomile tea, put your feet up. Take your shoes off, wriggle your toes. Visualize whirled peas.

Any country that can live through eight years of Richard Nixon has got resilience. It ain’t over till the fat lady sings Ride of the Valkyerie.

Besides, lay off ol’ gobear. He has made astonishing progress in his pilgrimage from the Dark Side. Prodigal sons, lost lambs, and all that. Very likely this is due to our patient instruction and temperate, reasoned debate.

Either that, or whoever is telling him to get out of bed and go trim his toenails.

Impossible.

Lucid, you always make me laugh, you know that? As for the putative obsession, I take myself very unseriously. Yoga, partying, and all that. I play tournament volleyball; scrabble; bridge; I write poetry, some of it even good; I’ll throw a party this weekend, go to three more, including the oyster-guiness fest at DUMBO. I frequently wriggle my toes, and I had english breakfast tea a few hours back; I have a big orange tabby who can sit on command.

None of which mitigates that stone cold fact that the Republicans are evil, and are on the cusp of completing their destructive agenda. Imagine if Nixon was immune from investigation and criticism. Would we have survived that?

If you say Gobear is improved, I’ll try to cut him some slack. I agree, it’s amazing how much a change of bedroom scenery can affect one’s point of view.

So, Ace, I just have to ask: what is your goal? Are you actually interested in preventing a Republican takeover of Congress? Screeching your unwavering militancy in people’s faces isn’t going to convince them to vote for the candidates you support. It is likely to persuade anyone on the fence between a Democrat and Republican to vote for the Republican.

You’re not being in any way persuasive, you’re just being irritating. I’m sure it feels good to bask in the smug sanctity of your convictions, but it’s incredibly counterproductive. Please just shut the fuck up, for the love of God.

Let me answer that question by asking you a question, Giraffe. Do you share my goal of preventing a Republican takeover? I’ve gotten five people to become active for Democracy – what’s your take? How productive have you been?

In fact, I have a nice mug for you that says “Straight Dope Kicks Ass,” if you can beat my numbers. Can you?

-Ace

I do share your goal of preventing a Republican takeover. Are my numbers better than yours? Hard to say. I don’t convert people, I just talk to them. I ask their opinions, and I listen, and then I explain why I’m concerned about issues like civil liberties and the war in Iraq. I think I’ve gotten people to at least seriously consider my positions – I don’t know if they’ve changed their minds as a result, but I can’t do any more than that.

When you say gotten people to become active for Democracy, I’m assuming you mean you’ve gotten liberals mobilized to attend demonstrations, etc. That’s great, but you haven’t increased the number of people voting Democrat instead of Republican. The election won’t be won by who has the most demonstrations or the catchiest slogans. It’ll be won by who can convince regular people that it is in their best interests to vote Democrat instead of Republican. You’re not doing that – you’re doing the exact opposite.

Giraffe, what is the projected turnout for the Nov. 5th elections? 35%? With Congress balanced on a knife-edge, 1 or 2 % better turnout among Democrats will make all the difference. That’s what I’m doing. The SDMB has no swing voters; everyone here has thought out their positions; I don’t find that’s the case IRL, and that’s where I am my most measured, non-confrontational self.

Better that than the reverse, eh?

What the fuck is with you?

It’s your kind of extremist, odious, provincial, ignorant, bile, and ill-founded petty hatred that is behind every fucking conflict the world has ever seen.

You call yourself a liberal, but you’re just a small hatefilled petty man. At he heart of liberalism is a desire for tolerance, compassion and understanding. You exhibit none of these admirable traits, and you hide behind your little claim of being a do-gooder as your excuse to promulgate your petty provincial hatreds.

You draw your line and place your labels without regard or thought to the people that you are doing it to.

You have the mundane witlessness to label people you know nothing about as evil, and dehumanize them and belittle their beleifs.

You make up lies about them as propaganda in the exact same fashion that your cohorts in mundane intolerance made up lies about black people and brachiation, and Jews as subhumans.

The defining characteristic of your fucking hateful ignorant ilk is their ability to pick an other and demonize them. Once you do that everything else you do is justified in your little maggot brain.

I know you well, because I’ve met you and read about you thousands of times, and the rest of humanity cleans up after your mess.

Liberals reach out to people to make the world a better place, because in their hearts, in their good hearts, is the beleif that we are all the same.

You are not a liberal. You’re just another hateful shit, pretending.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…sorry, but I assume by “everyone” you mean something like “everyone except you”.

God but you’re a hateful, idiotic, close-minded little shit. I cordually invite you to go fuck Ted Kennedy’s alcohol-inflamed liver.

Scylla: You’ve already done the “Substitute jew for conservative” routine, to worse effect, as I recall. Must you also repeat your mistakes, you Prince of Clowns?

Please don’t attempt to equate me with people who make charges without facts. Nothing I’ve posted is ill-founded; it’s all substantiated. Repbulicans, as a class, are the definition of evil. That perhaps a few here escape that label is mere exception to the rule. Your problem is with the reality of your partys’ actions, not with my underlining the same.

As for the rest of your typo-laden, inept petifoggery, I would counsel you to work on your lacking empathic skills before attempting comprehension of the liberal mindset. And this ignorant maggot would like to say: it’s I before E except after C. Is spelling a Democratic invention?

Until such time as you understand other people exist, and not just to serve you, I think you should stick to your forte: Hounding handicapped Viper drivers.

Um, if you’re going to bust Scylla and others for spelling errors (typing errors, really), may I point out that it is spelled Republicans, not Repbulicans?

Have you bothered to notice that the only person in this thread who is getting consistently knocked, even by his own allies, is you? Fucking moron.
Elucidator, thank you for the kind words but I’m still firmly allied with the Dark Side. Our action in Afghanistan was right, but this Bush fucking warmongering against Iraq is some imperialist bullshit. While Saddam Insane needs to die ASAP, America is setting a very bad precedent by insisting that we have the right to attack countries we don’t like.

Did you ever see that episode of Kids in the Hall where one of little guys goes up to the biggest guy in the place and says, “You outside.”? Once outside, the little guy threatens and taunts the big guy. The little guy backs up, takes a flailing charge while the big guy tokes on his cigarette with one hand and holds the other hand out in a fist. The little guy runs into the fist and drops to the ground. The little guy then gets up a says, “I’m not done with you” and makes the same charge over and over again with the same result yet he continues to taunt and threaten the big guy.

I don’t know why I just thought of that. Anyway, carry on.

No.

Well, I don’t know. My grandfather was a Republican, and my sister is one, and neither of them came across as evil to me. I think the Republicans are wrong on a lot of things, and some factions and groups within the party have adopted stances based on what I consider to be erroneous assumptions. They’re not evil, though. They’re just wrong. And, I hope most Republicans would say the same thing about me. I’m going to do my best to keep the Republicans from winning in November, but a person or group can be wrong without being ignorant, and, even if the Republicans do take both houses of Congress, the country will still survive.
