Stats on 99er dopers

Yeah, but how many times has Superman posted? And have you ever seen Clark K and Superman post in the same thread? :dubious: 'Cause we have a strict “no socking” rule around here.

Heh. I did not know that was possible. Back in the day, when management started coming down hard on “post-count party” threads, the threat of that could have been an effective motivational tool.

So, for those of you who don’t visit much anymore. . .you responded in a very timely manner to this thread. . .how did you know about it so fast? I’m on this board most days, and by the time i saw the thread several oldtimers had already replied! And in the giraffe boards thread** Giraffe** materialized out of nowhere to respond even tho his last prior activity was 2 months earlier. It’s kinda spooky!

You’re just too new to have become part of the hive mind.

I don’t even remember why we did that – I guess to see if we could. Don’t remember the outcome neither. You forget a lot after 20 years.

I first discovered the Dope via AOL in 1998. I was drawn in by the “map of Cecil’s brain.” I don’t remember any more if I ever posted in AOL Dope or just lurked, but I guess I must have made a few posts sometime or other. I followed the AOL board to this server in March 1999, but with all the in-jokes and references I decided I’d better familiarize myself with the board culture better, as though studying for an entrance exam. I spent 6 months or so diligently reading the archives of every SD column ever published, meanwhile lurking here. I finally registered in August, I think, but quickly forgot my user ID and never used it. I discovered I had misspelled the word in Lithuanian, but could never recall just how I’d misspelled it. I finally registered for real in October '99, after looking up the correct form of the word. Then I deliberately misspelled it, only because in those primitive pre-Unicode days I didn’t think use of the character š would work, so I substituted “sh.” Could not have foreseen then how much this would remain a part of my life all the years since. None of the other things I was doing online 20 years ago have lasted. Only the Dope still stands, proud and unbowed. So one of those disappeared '99 registrations was mine. Whatever account data it may have held has certainly been long since deleted. All this time, like kunilou, I’ve never gotten a single warning and the banhammer holds no fear for me.

18 years of lurking practice …

Lurking is always fine; its loitering that usually gets you a fine.

Still here, never been banned. I was on usenet from 1995 or so too.

Wait, what word in Lithuanian? I don’t see an “sh” anywhere in “Johanna”.

This post makes me think:

Back in 1999 … did anyone think this board would pretty much be around in essentially the same form for 18 years and counting? Seemed back then a lot of online hangouts would change or become obsolete (e.g. Usenet, most everything hosted on AOL) after a few years, and the denizens therein would just kind of shuffle off to the next thing.

I can say this: the places I visit regularly online now have been pretty much stable since 2000. It’s been an interesting experience to watch places change in some ways, and still manage to keep up an ongoing presence.

And here I sit, right in the middle…

My dim recollection is that as the number of active posters grew, the number of posters hitting round-number post totals grew with it, and TPTB figured they’d better kill post parties before they totally strangulated MPSIMS.

Since I was never privy to the thoughts of TPTB, this is all second or thirdhand, so take that with a shaker or two of salt.

Only mostly dead.

I sensed a great disturbance in the Force. …

Yeah, it wasn’t so much a huge number as it was the top 10 posts at any given time in MPSISMS might include two or three 1,000/5,000/10,000 “post parties,” and that soon started spawning “231st post” threads and the like.

I don’t believe they were ever officially banned, and I guess no one would stop me if I decide to celebrate my next post. But it definitely became declasse.

Awwww! I’m coming up on my 1k and a little fanfare would be all right!

LOL!
I’ll take what i can get!

We had much less server space and bandwidth back then as well which was part of the problem.

I think I’m the one who started that, with a thread for my 237th post.

I really dug up some memories, in the process of finding that thread.
