If we are talking dining out, then Sushi. I can make perfect steak at home any day I want (actually, just today I totally messed some up, but hey).
If it is in general. Rats, that’s a tough one. Still, I think it is sushi. Actually, yes. I could easily eat sushi every day (given enough variety). Steak, not so much.
Although I’d had it a few times before, I’ve really only started a true appreciation of sushi in the last six months or so – and I look forward to learning more about it.
On the other hand, I’ve eaten and enjoyed steak all of my life – from the 1/2-inch-thick sirloins that my not-terribly-well-off family had for Sunday dinner while I was growing up, to some truly sublime and melt-in-your-mouth prime cuts at Morton’s.
My first thought was sushi - definitely sushi. But after reading the replies I’m second guessing and going with steak. I love sushi but it’s so rare to have a really really good steak. The best steak is normally done at home on the grill which in itself is a fun experience. But at the same time a really good sushi restaurant is hard to find too. Ok, I’m going wish sushi. I absolutely love it!
Did anyone else notice that all of the cities where sushi is more common are on the coast, and all of the cities where steak is more common are inland? Much stronger correlation there than with politics.
And speaking of geography, I’m going to have to go with steak. Around here, any saltwater fish has to be shipped far enough that you can’t get the same-day or same-hour fresh stuff that sushi deserves, but Montana beef in any form is heavenly.
I agree, it’s a tough one. One of the reasons - by no means the main, but one of them - I gave up vegetarianism was for a good steak. But sushi comes in so many varieties!
I thought this was a joke, but it looks like there really are people that prefer sushi. It’s like a whole different world…
Sticky rice with a little bit of fish? Occasionally and as an exotic treat, maybe.
A good ribeye cooked over coals (not coal, this is important), on the other hand, is ambrosia.
Room temp is just as bad for me. I’ve tried sushi a couple times. One time it was actually cold, the other it was more like room temp. More than anything I think it’s the texture of “not hot” rice that makes me gag verses the actual taste. I can’t eat cold rice salads or stuff like that either.
It’s funny because when I tell someone I don’t like sushi, their first response is always, “Oh, you can get it without the raw fish.” I always have to say, Raw fish isn’t the problem, I like sashimi, it’s the cold rice."
I dislike both equally. (I’m not sure which one amazes Japanese people more…)
With sushi, it’s less the raw fish and more the blandness and seaweed. Loathe the stuff. Plus vinegared rice is just messed up. Why would you do that to perfectly good rice? With steak, I just don’t like large hunks of meat. Don’t see the appeal at all. I don’t like chicken breasts or pork chops either.
Believe it or not, I’m not that picky. But sushi and steak are two of my least favorite foods.
I am going to have to say sushi, for the reasons previously given. If I want a good steak, I can cook it at home. But sushi is much more complicated, and even if I did learn how to do it, there are some sushi rolls at my favorite place that I doubt I could ever duplicate.
Don’t get me wrong. I love good steak. It’s definitely one of my favorite foods. But sushi I could eat pretty much every single day for the rest of my life.
Give me a good spicy tuna roll or spicy salmon roll. Orgasm wrapped in seaweed.
Sorry to nit-pick, but wouldn’t a better comparison be “beef and potatoes or sushi?”
Steak has a much more limited definition the Sushi does.
Steak never involves non-animal based foods, Sushi can, from my experience.
Not to be contrary, but "steak vs. sushi’ is like comparing apples to oranges.
