They have apple and orange restaurants where you’re from?
Yes, it’s an imperfect comparison. Yes, sushi is a much broader category than steak. But I don’t think that a thread called “Beef and potatoes versus vinegared rice plus other toppings (usually seafood)” would’ve worked as well.
I could give up both at the drop of a hat. Despite the variety of sushi rolls available I find the stuff only good as a snack - two bites and then it all becomes boring. I love a good steak but could happily substitute lamb, pork, kangaroo, fish or poultry anytime. In fact when I lived in London beef was so expensive that I didn’t eat any for two years.
Do I have to register Republican now that I’m admitting that I HATE sushi, and the sushi fad lifestyle? Sushi is nasty, nasty, nasty. Please, stop eating it.
You can take my sushi away from me when I’m dead. And not one minute before.
But for sheer gastronomic pleasure, I think I’d prefer a good hunk of cow than a good sushi experience. I tend to eat more sushi as it’s relatively cheaper, and my crazy oven doesn’t get involved with making it, so I can make it at home easily enough, when the mood strikes.
But while I prefer cow, I’m not giving up my sushi. I’d give up pizza before I give up either of these foods.
Really? No one else wonders why the hell this is in this thread?
Oh, and since I’ve never had anyone introduce me to the sushi culture, my only experience is the little trays from Safeway. So Steak here. Plus I’m a butcher’s daughter, so I’ve had some really good steaks.
Major Domo lurker delurking ( for a food thread at that).
Is sushi in the USA only fish? I love Kobe beef sushi and ( I am scared to admit on USA board, but…) horse neck sushi. I have also tried duck and chicken sushi and I know they have deer and whale sushi. Seriously; if it tastes good on vinegar rice, than sushi it is. It is not a difficult question.
Not only, but mostly (well, fish or vegetarian.) Nicer sushi places (ie, not a generic Asian food place that also has sushi or grocery store sushi) will have a wider variety, but still probably not things like whale or horse neck. And while there might be chicken or pork, they would be cooked, not sashimi (that’s what it’s called when it’s raw, right?) because of the fear of raw chicken and pork over here (the chicken is rightfully so, IMO, salmonella is everywhere in those things, but pork is a LOT cleaner than it used to be.)
Thank you, bouv. Here in Japan, we do not have such fear of raw meat. Sushi with meat will usually be raw or at the very least, quickly seared. It is all delicious though.
Like others here, I have sushi once or twice a week but steak rarely. This makes the occasional steak wonderful for it’s rarity. having said that, I must go with the sushi. I’m the Norm Petersen of my sushi bar. Except that they call me Chibby-San when I walk in, not “NORM!”
In Vancouver, B.C., you can easily get a wider variety of authentic Asian dishes than pretty much anywhere in the U.S. (unless languange fluency allows you to fearlessly negotiate the back alleys of a big-city international district). That includes basashi, aka horse meat, which you can get here among other places.
(Old Seattle joke: “Hey, where do you go for really authentic Asian food?” - “Vancouver.”)
