I am ashamed to say that I ever even contemplated liking this asshole. Not only did he do the most unprofessional thing he could and walk out before a show without telling anyone, now we find out that he beats his wife. (Check wrestlingobserver.com for details.) You are a heartless, gutless son of a bitch and you deserve to be stricken from the collective memory of wrestling fans everywhere. I hope you saw the interviews that Vince and JR gave, Austin, because they sum up just how shitty you are.
On the walkout, Austin’s being a big baby, IMO. This is not the first time he’s thrown a fit when storylines didn’t go the way he wanted. From refusing to wrestle Jeff Jarrett, to refusing to job to Scott Hall, to this. I think it’s unprofessional.
As for the other accusations, I wouldn’t take my news from a wrestling website. And I write for one. I’ll wait to see it on a site known for news.
I just checked the webpages for the Dallas and San Antonio newspapers, as well as KMOL, the San Antonio news station quoted in the report…nada.
I think someone’s pulling your leg, brianjedi
Yes, I am a geek.
hardygrrl, I didn’t believe it at first either, but I’ve seen it on 411wrestling, which is my usual source, and Ultimowrestling, and at 1wrestling. Meltzer is claiming to have called the San Antonio police to confirm, and he is usually pretty reliable. I almost hope it’s not true, even though it wouldn’t change my opinion of him that much.
(hijacking my own post for a sec)
Who’s your pick for King of the Ring? I say RVD or Brock.
Strange…you run a google on Steve Austin beat wife news…all you get are wrestling pages. Surely if it were true it would be on some other page. He is a popular figure ya know. But it’s not.
I’ve run searches through the news site, including the affiliate which broke the story, and I’ve run them using bothe “Steve Austin” and “Steve Williams” - nada.
I agree, the mainstream media should have picked this one up by now if it’s true.
Those quotes were taken from WWE Confidential. They are actually quotes regarding Steve’s recent tantrum when he up and left a taping of RAW. They have nothing to do with the domestic violence story. I’m kinda confused as to why they are included in the story, other than they are good quotes that make him sound guilty.
So we have two unrelated (probably) things. One, Austin walking out. Two, him beating his wife. I think number 2 is true.
The first, well, that’s a little tougher. McMahon is known for burying people when they are no longer with the company. Typically they get no farewells, and all references to them are removed. Stonecold.com is still up, for god’s sake.
I think we’re in a new era, where kayfabe is not as important as it once was. Therefore, you have to create a newkind of kayfabe, one that acknowledges that wrestling is fake, and tries to use the personal lives of wrestlers as part of the storyline.
Basically, I think this is a new kind of angle. Austin is on a planned vacation, while Vince get’s to use this to build hype. (When’s Austin back?) He’ll build it at each PPV with Internet rumors. He’ll return in three or four PPVs, probably.
I do think Austin has been genuinely unhappy with his character and it’s staleness. He’s probably sick to death of “What?”, and wants it to die. I think this is cooked up by Vince and Austin, and he’ll be back with a new twist in his character.
Now, with the wife-beating thing…all that may change. McMahon may decide that the negative publicity is too strong. Maybe Austin needs rehab, or even jail time, depending on the accuracy and severity of the attack(s). That, however, should be in public record.
Same thing I thought. If it was a work, they would have saved it for Raw or a PPV. Jaded? Just a tad.
The WWE has done its share of tasteless storylines before (Austin/Pillman angle, anyone?) but this would take the cake. As hungry as Vince is for ratings, I don’t think he’d risk offending people with this kind of angle.
As a woman, I hope for her sake it’s not true.
Is this a shoot (real) or a work (storyline)? It’s always very hard to tell. Stone Cold Steve Austin (SCSA) has been very vocal with his dislike of his character’s direction lately, and I can’t say I blame him. The writing, especially for Raw (where SCSA appears), has been piss-poor as late.
If it’s a work, it gives SCSA time out of the spotlight, which can often be a good thing for a character that becomes so popular he ends up being a caricature of his own fictional character.
If it’s a shoot, then it’s time for some others to really step up. Much as I like some of the others (RVD, Guerrero, Jericho, Benoit, Booker T and Edge amongst them), only Kurt Angle has been consistently generating real heat throughout. Given strong angles, Jericho definitely can be elevated, and Benoit and Guerrero have strong upside. All three are very exciting to watch, which helps greatly. The most exciting to watch, RVD, needs to really work on his mic skills. Considering how over (liked) he is with his minimal skills to sell a match (as opposed to sell during a match, which he does excellently), he or WWE should get him into acting lessons to help elevate him to the next level.
