I know there’s a Carolla thread out there already but this episode just needed it’s own I felt.
OK, now I generally appreciate stupidity in all it’s forms. Jackass was at the time ne of the finnier things I’d seen on TV. However, did anyone see things reach a whole new level of stupid trainwreck tonite? Steve-O reached a level of retarded/borderline dangerous activity that even Courtney Love couldn’t aspire to.
I’m not sure at what point it reached it’s peak. Was it when he was spitting at the audience (I think there was an audience, I’m not sure) and screaming unintelligibly? Was it when he tried to hump Adam? Perhaps when he tried to flip the Adam’s chair upsides down…while Adam was still sitting in it? Then again, you could make a case for it being when Steve-O smashed the glass coffee table with his heel and proceeded to lacerate his Achilles.
I mean wow.
I knew when they announced the guest that the odds were pretty good things would go arwy, but this exceeded even my lowest expectations. Time will tell if there any ramifications for this puppy for Adam. If he wasn’t on the verge of being cancelled already, he has to be now. If the show survives this, I have to say that I’ll have attained a whole new respect for the folks at Comedy Central. That would be an impressive level of loyalty.
He’s probably the craziest and most unbalanced of the crew of guys who were made semi-famous on the TV show Jackass on MTV. Johnny Knoxville is the other name you might recognize from the group. He starred in Dukes of Hazzard as Luke Duke, and played one of the aliens in MiB II.
While they were always probably pretty irresponsible, a few of the guys once they got a level of fame and some sonsiderable cash ended up going off the deep end in vintage Hollywood fashion. It played at least some role in the break-up of the show and the guys all mostly going their own ways.
Steve-O is one of the guys from the MTV show, Jackass. If you’re not familiar with it, it was a show where a bunch of idiots do really stupid, often vulgar stunts, like shooting bottle rockets out of their asses or zapping themselves with tazers. Steve-O has his own show now. He’s essentially a carnival geek.
Last night’s show had the hypnotic quality of a car wreck. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show go so wrong without being even a little bit funny. Carolla even said it was his own idea to get Steve-O wasted before the show. Somebody should have told him that falling down drunk /= funny. It was painful how quiet the audience once. Nothing but an occasional snicker.
It’s not often that you can spot the exact moment at which a new series is officially over, but I think it had to be when Steve-O was trying to hump Carolla in his chair. If this show was a dog, they would have shot it.
I was thinking about this. I’m pretty sure that the show didn’t have a role in getting him that fucked up. I’m guessing Carolla was intending to make light of his behavior by saying they thought they’d get him a couple cocktails. Certainly he wouldn’t have been opposed to lubing up him or any one of his guests. However, it’s pretty clear that Steve-O was way more fucked up than having had a few drinks. Frankly, it’s unlikely that it was just on alcohol too. I’m doubting that the show got him that messed up, he did that to himself long before he even arrived on set. Or, perhaps he did it in the green room, whatever “it” was.
I’m not sure how you’d compare him. Tom Green was retarded in his own way, but I just think he had a pretty queer sense of what people would find funny.
Steve-O on the otherhand is just all fucked up. On Jackass which was always pretty nutty, there at least seemed to be a semblance of preparation and logic with most of the guys. When you watched the other 8 or 9 guys you got the impression the were perceptibly concerned about their safety around Steve-O. Most of his stunts were solo ones, no one seemed willing to put their nuts on the line with him.
I haven’t watched this episode yet (it’s sitting on my Tivo), but there’s no audience anymore. When the show moved from 11:30 to midnight, Adam mentioned they had gotten rid of the audience as the show was now going to be more “intimate”. Which sounded like a bullshit reason to me, but what do I know? You can hear a few laughs from the crew now and then though, which always sounds weird.
This is the only time I’ve ever wanted to watch anything with Adam Carolla. It sounds reminiscent of the time when Bobcat Goldthwaite set fire to his chair on Jay Leno. (Leno kept it together but was not the ittiest bittiest bit amused, and Goldthwaite had to pay a fine and make restitution.)
That explains the silence last night…not that it was much of a change from when there was an audience.
I love Carolla on Loveline but just about everything else he’s tried has sucked badly. I don’t think he works as a lead voice. He’s much better as a wisecracking sidekick. I understand he’s going to replace Howard Stern in some markets and I hope he plans on having some help. If he has a crew of other voices like stern does, I think he can succeed. If he just tries to go out thee and wing it alone, he’ll go down in flames.
Ayup, that was pretty bad. I’d put it at worse than Bobcat, not quite as bad as Tom Cruise (who, being sober, had no excuse).
I can’t imagine it’ll affect Steve-O’s popularity since he’s a circus geek already. It doesn’t read so much as “cry for help” as “cry for a big ol’ asskickin’”.
There is something seriously wrong with Steve-O. I’ve never really cared for the whole Jackass/Wild Boys thing. I’ve never actually seen wild boys but I’ve heard it takes Jackass to a whole new level (including teasing lions and shit, I’d love to see the lions win one). I’m a little bit worried about what happens when he tries to raise the bar again. I’m not sure who or what I’m worried for and it certainly isn’t steve-O, it’s just a general sense of worry.
I just watched that clip, and that was sincerely awful. I mean, getting him drunk was stupid, but that only makes the “this isn’t really a TV show” vibe that Carolla has and makes it way worse. And I think he’s pretty funny.
