Stewart/Colbert Rally on the National Mall: 30 Oct 2010

Brilliant!
Be Sure To Drink Your Ovaltine!

I’m planning on attending (I’m in Atlanta). I have in-laws just outside DC, and will Metro in on Saturday.

Colbert was asked to leavea House hearing on immigration today. I’m of mixed opinion on this- on the one hand I understand why the Congressman was irked at the media circus and levity attending such a serious issue, but on the other hand it’s hardly the first “Look at me” bid for publicity on their floors. Even this week.

I’m having a hard time with a Congressperson complaining about people who just sit behind a desk all day and talk rather than doing “real work”.

I Hate Crowds!

I’m definitely gonna be there. I have friends to stay with.

I’ve decided to drive this, from Madison. So I’ll be swinging by Chicago at least, and I’m not certain whether I’ll go east on 80 or 70. I’ve done both, but it’s been a long time. 80 was considered in better repair since it is a toll road most of the way. Any suggestion along these lines?

I think it’s a great idea to hook up with other Dopers who attend, and maybe dinner afterward?

If anyone along either 70 or 80 is interested in sharing driving/gas please PM me. My car is a stick, with pretty good mileage and an iPod port. Right now, I’m thinking I’ll be driving back Sunday, but extending the stay in DC and driving back Monday is definitely an option.

I hate people, but I love crowds!

I’m all for that. I plan to get downtown as early as possible and get back to the hotel as late as possible and spend all the time not at the rally sightseeing and walking around the mall. Should we start a new thread on this?

Done!

There are already 147 thousand people signed up on the Restore Sanity rally’s Redirecting.... Another 59 thousand on the Keep Fear Alive page.

In light of how the GOP’s new “Pledge to America” opens (thread here), I think an excellent “Restore Sanity” sign would be:

EXCUSE ME, BUT AMERICA IS NOT MORE THAN A COUNTRY.

To clarify, he was asked to leave before testifying, but he didn’t.

The sad thing is that the only outburst of laughter was at the end when he said “I trust that following my testimony both sides will work together on this issue to the best interest of the American people as you always do.”

America… One Ginormous Strip Mall

Plans are underway. Funny thing is, I asked around at work if anyone else was going and a coworker told me he had thought about going, but then his out-of-state father called him up and said he wanted to go, so he’s taking his father.

I’d love to see more sign ideas. I have an extra piece of posterboard.

I think the turnout for this thing is going to be ridiculous. I know a few peep who are going, and a lot more who wanted to but are unable.

The Only Thing We Have To Fear…
Is Not Having Anything To Fear

I can already see Monday’s jokes:

“We go to Aasif Mandvi for a report on the rally. Aasif?”
“Thanks Jon. The AP estimated about 200,000 people were present for the rally, but by my own personal count eleventy-bajillion people showed.”
“Suck it, Beck. :D”

That’s very funny.

When they first announced I saw all the righties on blogs laughing at how pitiful the turnout will be. After that’s shown to not be correct the diatribe will be that the left is so stupid because their heroes are clowns. I’ll be there and recording a lot of conversations. I hope to get some conservatives who are there because they too are very sick of the extremists making all the noise.
