Some of us in another thread have been discussing these rallies, on Oct 30 on the Mall. We think it’s a good idea for Dopers to rally together and go out for dinner/drinks later.
Who’s interested? Where can we meet before the rally? Where should we go after the rally?
The rally itself is only scheduled for 12-3 pm, so if you make a day of it there’s plenty of time for other activities.
Personally I plan to visit Madame Tussaud’s, which I’ve never been to before, and the Holocaust Museum, which I always try to visit whenever I’m in DC. My only question mark is food.
I’ve been to the Holocaust museum – it was by far the most intense museum experience I’ve ever had. I had to leave – I couldn’t even get half way through the tour.
I think it’s fine to hook up for the rally, and hook up again for dinner later. I’d like to identify a specific point in spacetime near the rallies where Dopers can meet before we overthrow TPTB.
Hmm. Less interest today than I would have thought. Oh well, there’s still more than a month.
The only thing I don’t know is where they plan to hold the rally. Are they going to copy Beck and hold it on the Lincoln Memorial? I’d hate to gather on the west end only to find out the day of that it’s being held by the Capitol.
I mean, that whole area is crawling with super mutants. It’s a bitch to fight through.
Well, my husband just got laid off (company closed) today, so the trip to D.C. is looking a bit less possible. We were planning on renting a car because ours is not running so hot lately, but beyond that it was going to be a total budget trip to begin with, complete with camping under the stars at national park nearby a Metro station.
We both still desperately want to go (never been to D.C.), so we’ll see what happens over the course of the next month. I’ll be following along here and if we make it there, we’d love to meet some Dopers!
Think about it this way. Unemployment might give you more time to spend in DC. A weekend with time out for a rally isn’t even enough time to see the museums on the Mall.
DC is absolutely the best city for tourists in America. Lots of great things to see, most of them free. You will love it (I lived in DC for 12 years).
Well, fortunately, I’m not unemployed. I’ve got three days off. It’s not likely I’d be able to afford more time off. I was really looking forward to this trip, so I hope we still get to go, but factoring in gas, campsite fees, eating out and Metro, *free *great things would be about the only we’d be able to do. Other than the monuments, I’d love to spend some time at one or two of the Smithsonian museums (probably Natural History and Air+Space). A little longer stay and I’d love to be at the National Zoo on a brisk fall day. I do wish we could go for longer. Cross your fingers for us that unemployment is short-lived.
That said, attending a rally on the National Mall is something I’d like to do in my lifetime. This is one I can certainly relate to.
That’s why I’m going, even though I’m going to be feeling the effects of the trip financially for a while. I’m tired of just sitting on the sidelines watching events happen, and this is something I want to actually get behind and say I was there.
I intend to be there and I would love to meet up with fellow Dopers. So I’ll be watching this space for a gathering place and time. Dinner after is iffy - it’s a bit of a trek for me via Metro and driving an hour, but we shall see how that goes.
And thanks for the bump. Maybe not quite the Colbert bump, but still…
I’m hoping some folks with more recent DC knowledge than mine will come along and propose some specific enough place where we can all hook up. But until we get more exact information on where they will be, picking a spot is gonna be tough.
Both show’s websites have a sign-up for email alerts. I signed up about a week ago and haven’t gotten anything yet.
As a current local, perhaps you might suggest a place to eat? I haven’t lived in DC since '92.
Sound like at least some others want to go off and be tourists for a while before and after the rallies. So it doesn’t need to be right around the Mall, but close to a Metro stop would be good.
I remember there used to be an Uno’s way out Connecticut near a Metro Stop.
Pizza and beer? Any chance Millie and Al’s in Adams Morgan is still open?
Or if we want a little exotic, DC used to have a bunch of very good Ethiopian restaurants. Red Sea still around?
There are plenty of good ethiopian restaurants in Adams Morgan. As Saturday night wears on the neighborhood starts to fill up with 20-somethings who can’t handle their liquor, but it’s OK in the afternoon/early evening. Millie and Al’s is still around but it tends to attract the aforementioned drunk 25 year olds. If you want to go to a bar in Adams Morgan, I’d suggest Angles, which is a more grown up place. No Pizza though.
For Pizza I’d suggest Radius in Mt. Pleasant, or Pizza Paradiso in Dupont Circle. Pizza Paradiso is a brick-oven place. I’ve heard good things about 2 Amy’s but I’ve never been.
I’d also suggest Jaleo’s, which is near Gallery Place Metro, not to far from the rally. I saw a bunch of tea-party types around that neighborhood after one of their rallies (not the Glen Beck one). Not sure where the Stewart/Colbert rallies are. Jaleo’s is a tapas place. it’s pretty good, kind of pricy. The Sangria is excellent but packs quite a punch.
The only reason I mentioned Adams Morgan is that’s where I used to live. It’s not especially convenient to the Mall, or the Metro (when I was there, the Zoo entrance was the closest).
