Stories that cry out for the Doctor to save the day

Typical Doctor Who story: The Doctor and his plucky companian Whoever jump into a time and place where the clueless humans are facing mortal peril from an extraterrestrial/ quasi-supernatural/ ancient evil plot/attack/invasion. What stories do you feel would be a perfect place for that strange blue box to appear in? My submission: Half-Life aka. The Black Mesa Incident. A botched scientific experiment opens a portal to an extradimensional invasion. Who can save us? <heh>

I can imagine Princess Leia making a desperate hologram saying “Help me, Doctor, you’re my only hope.”

The Doctor takes on the Cylons?

Independence Day is tailor made for The Doctor to sort everything out. In fact, the way they solved it in the movie was almost exactly a Doctor kludge.

You just know he’d go on about how they’re just like humans and everyone should live together in peace.

Plan 9 From Outer Space

Hmm. This starting me thinking about casting Jeff Goldblum as the next incarnation of The Doctor (assuming that David Tennant will step down eventually). I think Goldblum could pull it off nicely. Goldblum-haters are free to disagree, of course.

Not so much a Goldblum hater as not wanting the role of the Doctor sullied by an American actor.

Aw, but you owe us one. If Hugh Laurie can be Dr. House, Jeff Goldblum can be The Doctor, OK?

Sorry. I love House, but that just doesn’t balance out.

Although Hugh Laurie would be a great Doctor. Then you can bring the Master back yet again, this incarnation played by Stephen Fry.

I have to say that idea made me laugh out loud - startled my dog.

Then I thought, can Fry really do a villain? After House, I’m convinced that Laurie could. So, …, maybe reverse that casting? Fry as a slightly stuck-up version of the Doctor (harkening back to Doctors 1 and 3?) and Laurie could easily out-sneer any previous incarnation of the Master.

Star Trek’s The Chase would have a place for the Doctor to run about, exulting about the secret he’s uncovered, urging the many races of Star Trek to, you know, just get along.

There are a lot of stories where Picard could be replaced by the Doctor. Instead of having Picard to lecture or preach about morals and someone technical coming along to provide technobabble backup, we could have the Doctor doing both tasks. It would be fun to have him jumping about the bridge instead of Picard, however satisfying it was to see Picard calmly put some alien of the week in their place.

How about the Doctor running around on the bridge and getting up Picard’s nose because Picard is so set on following all the rules? I would love to see that. I can hear Picard’s voice projecting the phrase, “We must follow the procedure!”

Of course, to be a proper Doctor Who episode, there would probably have to be a few more regulations stuffed in to hamper Picard.

The US presidential election in 2000.

Oh, sorry, fictional, my mistake.

Very likely.

He’d still blow them up in the end.

He’d talk some sense into Frodo or maybe finish the Ring-destruction job himself.

If the Doctor was involved we’d probably discover that Sauron was just a front for the Daleks.

End of Evangelion.

“Oh, Gendo, you’re a clever man. I’d call you a genius, except I’m in the room… but everything you’ve invented you did to fight your loneliness. And that’s brilliant. That is so human. But once you get rid of pain and mortality, then what’s there to strive for? Eh? Instrumentality won’t advance. You’ll just stop. You’ll stay like this forever. A melted Earth with melted men and melted thoughts. Lacking the one thing that makes this planet so alive. People. Ordinary, stupid, brilliant people!

Any classic sci-fi movie: The Day the Earth Stood Still, Body Snatchers, hell maybe The Thing?
