And yet they were paying for Ella before a law firm approached them to sue the government. And they were shocked…shocked that they were indeed paying for that coverage. And then dropped it before filing their suit.
And yet they have no problems selling products produced in a country that forces abortion. Nor do they have problems investing in companies that produce contraceptives as part of their retirement package. All of which is voluntary.
I do wonder how liberals would have reacted if Costco was the company having an issue with an aspect of ACA.
It depends on the situation. If the CEO of Costco were to suddenly find religion and do what Hobby Lobby did, I would feel disappointment and anger, just as I do of Hobby Lobby. Why would you think otherwise?
Why do you think Costco would elicit a different reaction?
Are you quite sure you want to know the answer to that?
So Adaher, if Walmart becomes Orthodox Jewish and dictates its employees cannot bring non-kosher food into the lunchroom, while continuing to sell such items, you see no problem? You would defend that as being in line with your vision of America?
Walmart is a public company. However, I have no problem with the local kosher supermarkets banning non-kosher foods in their lunchroom and you shouldn’t have a problem with it either.
But now corporations are people, and can be religious people, and their religious beliefs must now be honored. So my Walmart example still needs answering. Hobby Lobby isn’t a kosher deli. Please again. If Walmart becomes an observent Jew, how many of “its” religious beliefs should employees need to observe?
Or, I guess then, if Hobby Lobby decides to go public, now you feel the contraceptive exemption is no longer valid?
Whose idea was it that employers should have anything to do with employees’ healthcare anyway? Liberal? Republican? Someone else’s?
Never mind religious exemptions. Employer-provided health care is the stupid idea of the millennium.
I’m sure you’ll have no trouble pointing me to exactly where Jews are prohibited from paying for others to eat non-kosher meals?
CMC fnord!
It’s absolutely not valid, because the shareholders won’t be all Christian. Hobby Lobby is a family-owned business.
And it doesn’t matter that Hobby Lobby is not a kosher deli. If they sold Hobby Lobby to an orthodox Jewish family tomorrow, that family could certainly prohibit pork on Hobby Lobby property.

It doesn’t make a difference. It’s not the government’s job to argue the Bible with believers. If the belief is faithfully held, then the government must not infringe that belief except to fulfill a compelling interest.

Jews can actually buy hams for people. But not cheeseburgers. The no mixing dairy and meat products is something Jews can’t violate even if they are not the ones eating the product. Jews may not benefit from dairy/meat combinations in any way. You’re not allowed to feed it to your dog, so you certainly wouldn’t be allowed to feed it to your employees.
So as soon as one share-holder isn’t “family”, but say “long-time, close, family friend but no shared blood”, religious beliefs of the ‘closely held’ corporation go out the window and are invalid? Or still valid as long as the famly friend is a Christian? If friend becomes Jewish, then what? Is that where you draw the line? Or if not, where is it drawn, between ‘family business’ and public?
IIRC, up to 50% of the corporation can be held by non-family members, and still qualify.
According to npr about 90% of all US companies are closely held.
If this was Costco doing this I would definitely cross them off my list of shopping stops even though I’ve bought thousands of bucks worth of stuff there in the past. Why would I hold Costco to a different standard than Hobby Lobby? Why would you Adaher?
That is the IRS definition, but it’s not really relevant here. SCOTUS could have come up with any definition they liked.
But wouldn’t the IRS have to change theirs to agree?
Wow. According to Obama, Muslims are responsible for building the very fabric of our nation.
First off, the idea that Muslims helped build this country is ludicrous. But come on, Obama - you’re supposed to be a Constitutional law professor and all that, and you don’t know that we do NOT live in a democracy?
You’re really bad at this.
