We’re talking about a specific Presidential request that was made not that long ago.
How much time do you think the House GOP need for a request like this?
Long enough to work something out with the Democrats or their more conservative members. The President’s request did not address the problem as they saw it and asked for more money than was needed. Failure of leadership again. He asked for what he wanted rather than something everyone could accept. Even the Democrats were disinclined to give him his full request.
Wait; what?? Leadership means modifying your goals to appease others? No wonder the GOP is so fukdup.
It means recognizing the short timeframe and proposing something everyone can get behind, even if grudgingly.
Instead, he guaranteed that there would have to be a lot of haggling over his request.
And don’t leave out the Democrats, they managed to insert funds for Israel’s Iron Dome system into an emergency immigration bill.
Y’know, adaher, I’ll bet your biceps look like Lou Ferrigno’s what with the workout you’re giving them with all the handwaving.
I realize this isn’t a stupid liberal idea, but it sure is a stupid liberal. Although in fairness, Sheila Jackson-Lee is about as dim as they come, and as mean:
“Failure of leadership”, are you high? Obama put something down on paper, made a concrete proposal. If the House can’t come up with a counter-offer, that’s hardly the President’s fault.
And you didn’t answer my question. I’m looking for a number, three weeks, three months, what?
I see. So, when Republicans obstruct something, it’s OK because it must be “a very contentious issue.” Republicans are, of course, happy to cooperate on the non-contentious issues, like the resolution affirming the cuteness of kittens. It’s only on the really important stuff, like the debt ceiling and immigration, that they screw the country over.
And “didn’t have the time”? You’re an excellent comedian.
I didn’t say Republicans obstructed nothing. I said Republicans don’t obstruct everything. Contrary to Democratic talking points.
And the immigration case isn’t one of obstruction. The President made a pitch even his own party couldn’t accept. Given the short time frame, that is actually a failure of leadership. Unless he never wanted anything to pass, which is possible. Need to reinforce the talking point. Even many Dopers believe it these days.
The Republican controlled house has no leadership capable of presenting their own ideas? Is the president some sort of miracle worker that can come up with ideas on short notice? If the claim is what the president offered was unworkable, why can’t the house present an alternative that is. Sausage making is their job, it’s ridiculous they can’t manage to put something together.
Your argument might have some merit if they presented a bill and the president or senate blocked it. The House has done absolutely nothing to try and address the problem. Ironically a week after suing the president for acting on his own to address issues with the healthcare bill, the house leadership is now requesting the president act on his own to address the immigration crisis because they can’t manage to do their job.
Let me rephrase that for you. “…because it’s an election year and most of them are way too afraid of their primary constituency to do their job.”
Since this is what certainly would have happened if the House had managed to vote on something (and I haven’t heard if the second attempt succeeded or not,) this would have been their best strategic approach. Pass something, and then condemn the Senate for changing it to the point they can’t accept it any longer.
They’re missing the chance to actually do something vaguely clever.
(The only “stupid liberal idea” in this post is me, posting in the wrong thread, as the Republicans are certainly the stupid ones in this farrago.)
The Senate also failed to pass a bill because they couldn’t agree on how to pay for it.
Stupid liberal of the day: Jan Schakowsky, doing the minimum wage challenge. This is her menu for the week:
If she’s trying to make people feel sympathy, this isn’t going to work.
What’s your problem with it exactly?
Not much in the way of fresh fruit or veggies. What the salad consists of isn’t specified and broccoli is cheap. Overall, it’s rather bland and limited in appeal.
The Senate Bill was blocked by a Republican filibuster. The Democrats could have passed a bill with majority. To say it failed to pass because they couldn’t agree on funding is disingenuous, a majority of the Senate agreed on funding.
Actually, it was stopped on a procedural objection: it busted the spending caps. Takes more than a simple majority to authorize that.
But not a crisis situation making a raise in the minimum wage an urgent thing. Schakowsky demonstrates that a reasonably intelligent person can formulate a reasonable budget on minimum wage. I’d imagine most of us have done it. I have. I’m sure most Dopers have.
Living on minimum wage sucks, but it sucks in a “Wouldn’t it be awesome if I had more money” way, not in a “OMG I’m starving!” way.
Until something goes wrong. A car wreck, a bad illness, getting fired, a sick relative, an incident of crime, etc., can all lead directly to catastrophe. The working poor are often one instance of bad luck away from homelessness.
